Years ago there was a thing called"apprenticeship programs",Now days the only thing that matters is if the person is on time to start work and has a pulse... A lot of company's don't care if the person (employee)has any knowledge of what they should know about the job or task they are doing...There once was a thing called "pride in your work"
Now all I see is weather they fix it or not the bottom line is "pay me!!"

The problem a lot of dealers have nowadays is paying for the factory training necessary for a Tech to understand it all and then having the Tech leave for a bigger dealership who will pay more. It has always been my belief that the factory should track such people and remove their training credentials under such circumstances.
Without something like that in place I can understand why dealers are gun shy about sending any of their Techs to school.

I've looked through the shop manual, and haven't seen anything except the 8 blinks. Now that the bike has less than a full tank, the light doesn't blink. When I start the bike cold, the fuel gauge drops back to empty and then goes up to the fuel level. I can't remember - is this normal?

That's what mine does and I have been told it is normal, though it does not do that every time I start it.
And yes, the manual only gives 8 blinks. That, I believe, is part of the problem. Not only that, the owner's manual talks about the 8 blinks, but the dealer I took it too could find nothing about the 8 blinks. I had to tell them it was in the owner's manual, then they called Yamaha.

If the dealer told you it was normal, have them start a brand new R*. If it don't do it tell them that the new bike must be broke and they need to make the light blink.

I know the blinking isn't normal - but is it normal for the fuel gauge to go to empty and then back up after the initial sweep when the bike is turning over.

OK - then the light only blinks 4 times when the tank is filled a little higher than yamaha's recommendation. If I fill the tank no higher than the bottom of the filler neck, the light does not blink. I am wondering if this isn't an intermittent problem, but just yamaha's way of saying the tank is too full on.the fuel injected R*

So, my 01 Roadie is doing the same thing....2 sets of 4 blinks, long pause, 2 sets of 4 blinks, repeat cycle. It didn't do it all the time at first so I chalked it up to an intermittent fault...now it is constant and the fuel meter is dead and fuel level doesn't affect the behavior. My mechanic said it was a bad meter unit and a replacement is $700. I think i'll live with it for now and rely on the trip meter.
