How tall is she and is she a small framed girl? Only reason i ask is while a 650 may be the purfect starter bike a 950 or 1100 v star she could grow into and still be good for more than a starter.

Check ebay, lot's of dealers looking to clear the floor. This one is about a 9 hr drive from you but 2k less than MSRP. Only 8 hrs left though.Even if it expires, you may be able to call him in a few days and ask if it's still there, he may drop a few hundred more.

she's only about 5-3,5-4 and about (don't tell her I said this ) 130 pounds. I think a 950 or 1100 might be a little too much for her. But ahe has to sit on one to really see what would fit her good.

I agree, no 650. I had one and it was great... till you went over 60MPH. I could hit top speed with my wife on it of 80+ MPH, but it was not fun at all. I wouldn't go with the 1300 because it has liquid cooling and I prefer air/oil cooled due to lower maintenance.

The only issue is she may be too short for it. If you went that route you would have to lower the back end. There's an easy mod for it posted on 650ccnd and it shouldn't hurt ride quality.

At this point, I think a shadow might be more appropriate due to the lower seat hight.

+1 on the Shadow. My wife is about your daughters size and the Shadow was about the only one she could get her feet flat on the ground, and it's a rock solid bike.

It may be a good bike but I don't think any "starter" bikes look nearly as good as the V-Star or have the aftermarket the V-Star does. I think people upgrade from a V-Star only because they HAVE to (like me, too tall and too high RPM). The bike is like a toyota, it works great, but no frills. My mom lasted a whole year before she went from 1100 shadow to Harley, but that was around 12 years ago. I had my vstar until I got married and needed a bigger bike for the wife (2 years). I would have kept it for an "around town" bike and gotten a bagger by now if I were still single (happy not to be, love bike but love wife more).

I still think she should TRY a V-Star. If she is able to tippy toe, go for the slam. My $0.02

Actually the 1100 VStar Classic sits quite low. Course they don't make them anymore but would definitely be a good starter bike. Kai

this one is mine...it sits at 24 inches at the seat, it has a lowering kit.

there is a couple of them on Craigslist in Madison, Wi---> http://madison.craigslist.org/mcy/2961489156.html

this one is going for 4600.00 with 4536 miles...

Oh, and a 950 or 1100 won't be too much. The weight and balance is close to a 650 and there is more low end torque in them so it should be easier for her to learn the clutch.

I don't know of any dealers in that area, but my vote would be for the 950. My dad had a 650 V-Star and my Vulcan 500 gave it a run for its money. I prefer the 950 over the 1100 because of the placement of the oil filter on the 1100. It is behind the exhaust. So, one of the exhaust pipes must be removed or the owner must buy a relocation kit. Not my favorite design in the world.

The 750 Shadow is a good bike to start with and sits lower to the ground. I started on one but moved up to my Roadstar within 6 mos as I have long legs and also couldn't keep up with my boyfriend as he has a Roadliner.

My dad rides a 1100 classic and it sits quite low as well, he is 5'8" but only has a 28" inseam (short legs)and he flat foots it. If she is able to handle the 950 or 1100 I would go with that speaking from experience especially if she is planning on doing highway riding. She won't notice the weight difference as it is so minimal.
