I don't have any special tools like a router or anything. I would say drill a hole at the spot you want the slot in the metal to end at, then use a dremel with a metal cutting wheel and cut 2 straight lines from the original slot to the ne drilled hole. There you have it, slot extended. Or depending on the width, if you don't have a dremel, you could use a angle grinder and just grind the slot as long as you want it to be.
