You don't need no stinkin choke! 1 Year ago
So it turns out that R*s don't have to be cold blooded after all... And if you think yours is, read on.

As many of you know, for some time now I've felt something wasn't quite right with my R*; especially when I heard stories of how others performed. By keeping at it, I finally got mine to run well enough now, that I don't even need the choke! First start of the day and all I do is turn the key and press the starter and ride off! Best of all, it no longer stalls when cold, or coughs out the carb, and as a bonus, my mileage has improved by over 25%!

Between:
- jetting it properly and dialing in the PMS
- changing the plugs
- cleaning the air filter
- adding some Marvel Mystery Oil to the gas for a few tanks
- and last but certainly not least, setting the accelerator pump correctly

...my roadie is even more of a joy to ride than ever!

So if you suspect your's is not running optimally, don't settle. Trust your gut and stay at it until you get it right. ...And be sure to get your accelerator pump dialed in! ...If you haven't done it already, go do it now! The stock setting is fer crap.

Thanks everyone, especially Erbman and Curt, for all the great advice and putting up with my incessant questions. And a special mention to SKWEARpeg for repeatedly insisting I check the accelerator pump.

Cheers all!

I even turned down my pump on my HSR42 a tad. Adjusted the PMS a bit. Every little bit always helps.

Good on yah for getting down and dirty with the CV40. Its a bugger sometimes. Some people end up having to drill bleed holes in the butterfly to help help out with richness.

Glad you got it figured out.

I can't stop myself from pointing out the R* doesn't need a choke and it does not have a choke, it is an enricher.

Yah, I know. I originally had enricher, but I figured most would understand better if I said choke.

you SHOULD need the "choke" at first...it is too rich on the needle or the pilot jet is too big..

Ya..who wouldn't be in for 25% better gas mileage...BUT..are there long term consequences for not using choke...or setting bike so it doesn't need choke? Seems I saw another post here a short time ago where the poster (and I forgot who) was saying that the bike is designed for the choke and setting to not use it will cause other problems....If I find it, I will repost here...just sayin..

Okay Doc, you talked me into it. I'll take my accelerator pump out of operation this weekend
I'm glad it helped. If it would of made it worse, I'd of felt bad, but at least i wouldn't have wanted to mess with it.

I would think you should still have to pull the enricher on a cold start??? Is it possible, that you need to trim a few donut slivers off the back of the enricher knob to be sure it's closing all the way? Is it still on slightly?

I was surprised by all the response from those like Erbman who said they had completely(or almost) disabled their accelerator pumps.
Whenever fuel mileage is the topic, the biggest critic, is that a steady hand on the throttle makes the biggest difference. This would sure enough make a difference.

Sigmund, here's the link you requested.

This kinds goes against most of what i`ve learned on here.

"IF" it starts with out the choke/inricher is too rich

Mine will not start with out the choke, but warms up
hell of a lot quicker than stock. My mileage is right where the
factory says it sould be(between 35 and 40 MPG. Runs great and
strong)got tired of looking for those elusive high MPG's

But I think here(hot and dry) would rather be slighty rich

My 2c's
