Bike is dead!! 1 Year ago
Well, I just got done cleaning out my carb, and installing Curts ported manifold on my 2001 Roadstar.
and Rode it for a couple miles around the house, no major problems, but felt like the carb still needed some fine tuning.

Well I rode it out to work lastnight (about 30 miles out) and it did fine. Got off work, and she didnt want to start. Ended up getting a jump because I tried so much, I drained the battery, but at least I got it running.

Well while letting it idle, before going back home, it wanted to stumble and the idle kept dropping, unless I juiced the throttle a bit.

Figured I would take a closer look at things from the house, but apparently the bike didnt agree, because about 3/4 of the way there, it just died. Tried starting it back up, but no cookie.

Just trailered it home and didnt have a chance to look at anything before it was off to work (where I am at now). Im going to try to get into it tomorrow, but my question is this: would the PMS screw being slightly off, cause all this? I didnt change out anything else in the carb, and of course I did go to the ported intake. It already had a 170 Mikuni Main in it from the previous owner, to match the B.A.K. and V&H longshots. A few weeks back I changed the longshots to a set of Roadburner 3" drag pros. Other than that I have not messed with the bike. Does anyone know if there is a significant difference between the two sets of pipes? and maybe that is an added part of my problem?

A ported manifold will make you run richer than the stock will. And I dunno but a 170 main in a 1600 motor sounds rich to me to begin with. Check the plugs you may have fouled them out.

First how far out was your PMS turned if it was out too far I will bet it vibrated out.

I turned it out 2 1/2 turns. I followed the instructions that I found on here for lightly seating the pms screw and then turned it out exactly 2 1/2 turns from there. And the 170 jet was what the bike had in it from the Previous Owner. I have the Barons "adjustable" PMS screw on the way. But even if the jetting was slightly off after upgrading to the ported intake, it shouldnt be off enough to totally kill the bike should it?

I'll be pulling the plugs and inspecting them hopefully tomorrow. I just was curious if by my above description, if it sounds like I am way off on my jetting, and or my changing the pipes would have made a difference. I mean I know that all pipes flow differently, but they are very similar pipes. I just like the look and sound of the Roadburners better.

I droped 2 jet sizes when I put my ported manifold on. And when I made the main jet on my hsr to rich it wouldnt idle to save my arse had to keep reving it so it wouldnt stall out. If I would have left it like that it would have fouled out my plugs making it not want to run at all. Not saying im right and thats what it is but I would look at that first.

I was running a 170 mikuni main, with the clip in the fourth and 3 1/2 out on the PMS, and my bike ran fine(36+ in town). That was with a poormans BAK and V&H Longshots. Keeb should be good with the 170 and the BAK.
I really thought the missing PMS screw was a good shot.
Short of tearing it apart and cleaning it again to make sure the pilot circuit is clear???
Is the cap still in place on the AIS port on the manifold?

Well I am definetly going to take Curts advice, and check to make sure that I havent totally lost my PMS screw (and if i did, how the heck do I prevent that from happening again?!?)

As for the AIS, I had Curt solder that closed when he did the manifold for me, so that isnt a problem. The Previous owner did the AIS delete kit on the bike.

I remember somebody had slid a piece of tubing over the end of their Barons PMS screw, and then zip tied it to the idle adjuster line. The tubing made it easier to adjust the screw as well. He had lost his riding down the highway.
