The difference in weight from something like a Honda Rebel 331 pounds compared to a Sportster at 555+ pounds would be quite a bit for a new rider.

Sportsters weigh around 550lbs. She better practice on that bike before hitting the streets.

I thought it would be worse than it was, but bad enough on TV for all the world to see ... including us.
Those courses are usually pretty damn good. I took a Harley course over three days and two weekends way back when. I still practice quite a bit of what I learned -- especially when it comes to evaluating risk and the pre-ride checklist.
But the course isn't the be all to end all. There is no substitute for riding time. It's like logging flight hours. The more you have, the better you usually become.

Not basically... it's totally true. We were in class and a girl who never should have passed passed and I heard the instructor telling her when he gave her her certificate that she understands concepts of safety fine but that absolutely shouldn't get on the road without a LOT more practice. Thing is safety class in CT is mandatory to get a license, so by passing her, it allows her to get the license, and I did not see the point in that at all.

I do think personally that it should be mandatory as well. Same for owning a handgun...you should have to take a safety course that teaches you when you can / can't pull your weapon etc.
My course had a 2-drop rule...dump it 2x...seeya later...sadly I even saw people that had their own bikes get booted...though they could've just bought them not long ago..who knows...

Maybe this should be added to the motorcycle safety course. They have a bunch of heavier bikes for people to try to hold upright and then they may realise that they need to stick with that 125/250 a little while longer. I can't say much. I started on a Kawasaki Vulcan 500 LTD. I also weighed 280lbs at that time. So, I thought the 500 would suit me better.

HD did that with some heavier bikes at the course I attended.
There was also one person who washed out. She was allowed to take the written test, but they would not certify her for the riding test. They allowed her to come back the following weekend. Don't know the result. She had lost control of the bike a couple of times. I remember once she took off so far and so fast that before we knew it, she was headed for a huge dumpster 200+ yards away from the course. She finally throttled down and stopped the bike. We were always on our guard around her because she was a serious hazard to the rest of us. The really ironic/comical thing was that she was the only one on the course with all of the HD riding gear and did the most talking about bikes and riding.

Only thing I've found so far that is an issue with my R* is that when trying to do the figure 8...first gear stalls out fairly easily, so I'm feathering the clutch till my hand cramps.... and if I try 2nd..its just a touch too fast. I like being able to practice on the course the base uses when its not in use.
The one trick I *did* learn is that once you put your foot down, do NOT pick it up...finish your maneuver and go on to the next. If you pick your foot up and "reset", then they can take a whole new set of pts off if you put your foot down again....sneaky!
