Stock, the bike holds 5.3 qts. When we drain, we can only remove and replace 4.3 qts. One remains in the engine. typically, about 2 qts. goes in, and remains with, both the engine and the tank, since we've learned to change out only 4 qts.

This would seem to mean that 3 to 3.2 qts. would be in the engine, and that you can only change about 2 qts at a time.

The back hose is to equalize pressure between the engine and the tank. It can probably be blocked off okay. The forward one is a true engine breather, and must be allowed to remain open... but, since oil and vapor will pass through that neck, you must put a hose on it, and vent it somehow.

Stock, it went to the air cleaner. For those of us without the stock air cleaner, we run a hose, either down below the engine, or, as I have done, up the frame spine, under the tank, to an auto crankcase breather filter, like the Autozone AF59, for under $3.

Did I get this right, fellas?

Hello guys,

Roger .. i will let it breath as it is the PCV or at least attach a hose and a filter ..
What about the other 2 .. the top left which is the return to oil should i be closing that route or ?
The major problem is the second picture hose which spits the most of the oil .. what to do with it ?
As Erbman said .. without the oil tank i still have inside 3.2 qts of oil .. shouldn't that be enough to run safe the engine ?
When i changed the oil i put it 4.2qts but i don't understand why it spits out so much of it .. it seems to be more than 1qts
To answer your question .. i think the main reason for removing the oil tank is space .. he chopped down the bike and i guess there was no space left for the oil tank .. how big should the tank big in it's original size ? how many qts should be in there ?
Yes, the bike has been converted to chain .. don't know the reason why .. to be honest after i bought it i kept repairing on it since many of the modifications were poorly made .. i will post those latter on so we don't get to confused
I thank you in advance for helping me figuring out this

If you put in 4.2 qts, thats the reason it's spittin oil. You still have a qt in there after the draining of oil. and since the engine only holds 3.2qts, you have 2qts overfill. 1qt remained plus 4.2qts fill, equal 5.2qts in a engine that only holds 3.2qts means 2 qts over.

to me it looks like he put a flat top cover on the oil tank so it still there but would need better pics to tell for sure have heard a few people doing that to clean that area up so my gues would still be 4 qts as usual (2 and 2)

In the bottom picture I can see what looks like a small hose connector just behind the filler cap. Your oil tank breather hose should probably connect to that. And there does need to be a connection between the engine and the tank.

I can see what's been done but you have to understand that the engine oil supply is drawn from the tank, or what's left of it in your case. The crankcase is just there to catch the oil and return it to the tank. Except for splash the oil in the crankcase isn't used to lube the engine. If those braided hoses are hooked up like the stock tubes then one is the return line and the other goes directly to the pressure side of the pump.

What you need to do is figure out how much the oil capacity was reduced and run that much less in the engine. If it was reduced a quart then you need to add 3.3 quarts after an oil and filter change - you get the idea.

Since you're going to be running less oil in such a large engine I would highly recommend installing an oil cooler.

If I were you, I'd call the previous owner and start asking questions.
How much oil to put in. Did he really remove the oil tank or only install a Low Profile Transmission cover. That picture shows a custom cover which can be bought at SS custom.

Re:99 roadstar problems, need advice 1 Year, 5 Months ago
hey guys,

very nice replies here .. i learned alot
problem is i am very confused .. i don't know if i have or not the oil tank .. i don't even know how it should look like and where it should be as stock
i will attach some pictures with the whole engine from both sides maibe we can figure it out
i bought it from a guy who bought it from another guy .. i don't have contacts unfortunately with the original owner
greenpus .. you are right .. that trans cover looks alot with what i have, does it mean the oil tank is still there somewhere under the cover or ?
small question .. i understood that each oil change it remains 1qt of oil inside which we cannot drain .. let's say i have mobil 1 10w-40 now and in spring i want to change to 20w-50 (mobil/motul/etc).. as far as i know mixing diferent types of oil is bad .. can end up with a broken engine .. how do we solve this ? drain all the oil
i guess adding a radiator for cooling the engine is out of question .. changing oil sooner is a solution ? i am thinking less oil get's bad faster than more oil .. so shorter oil change intervals should be good
thanks in advance

Changing oil from 10-40 to 20-50 will hurt a motor? I guess my engines should have blown up 1000's of miles ago then. Hell for the first 63,000 miles on one of my R*'s I ran regular engine oil, not V-twin oil and now with a litle over 70,000 miles the engine still runs great. Either I'm very uneducated & lucky or some of these things I hear are just not proven facts.

I believe he was asking a question, not stating that mixing oil is bad, just asking if it was bad.

I don't know about your oil tank delete but can we get a couple pics of the full bike, that thing looks pretty cool! Not much of a road star left except the engine...
