No humbug I went back and read it again. He said that he was told that mixing oils is bad so how does he solve the problem of oil still remaining in the engine? And that's why I said that I don't believe that mixing oils is bad. Been doing it for years.

As for his oil tank problem. I think the tank is still there but the filler tube was removed and a cap added right on top of the tank. I could be wrong on that one, as I have never really taken the time to look that area over and see how it works. I just keep fresh oil in mine and keep riding.

you still have your oil tank, just a flat-top cover on it. the 2 hoses down by the tank are the feed and return. the oil tank forms part of the transfer case, which you still have in place.

the reduction in capacity will be minimal, so just go with 3 1/2 liters and you should be o.k.

remember that there is 2 drain plugs for the oil, one on the bottom l/hand side on the crankcase, the other below the tank.

Re:99 roadstar problems, need advice 1 Year, 4 Months ago
yay .. that is very good news indeed .. the oil tank is still there just a little shaved
ok, then i guess as someone already suggested i should put a plug and close the tube coming from the near of the oil filter cap and that should stop the oil spilling on the bike

sorry hardone .. i was saying what i heard .. that mixing 2 diferent oils is bad and can hurt your engine, also recently a friend of mine with a honda transalp twin engine was running low on oil and added some extra oil to match the level (diferent oil) and while riding on the highway the engine seized .. the oil was making bubbles and foam when he opened the filter cap .. exactly like beer when you shake it before opening
like an old saying .. better be careful even with yogurt than get burned .. something like that

one of the other issues i have .. i recently changed the old stock carb because was old and took forever to start with a mikuni 45 and there is alot of stuff missing .. no vacum/tps/voes .. i read on the documentation and there should be more lines coming in and out of the carb ..at the moment i only have the fuel line and that's all
engine starts great thou .. but not sure if it's good or bad that those things are missing
the mikuni is a speedstar flad side carb and i put it on without changing anything to it .. is it ok ? didn't had time to run in .. but just by hearing it at idle i can say it's running abit more reved than the old stock

The only line you need going to the HSR 45 is the fuel line all the ports on the 45 should be capped off. I am running two of them one on my 05 and one on my 07. I am running my ported manifold, Dyna 3000, and the elevation here is around 480 ft. I run the 97 needle clip on 3, 170 Yost HD main, 25 pilot, 70 pump nozzle, and air screw out 1 3/4. Both bike haul and get good gas mileage as long as I don't go nuts.

Hmmm, a much smaller oil tank appears to be present, and some kind of twist on cap looks to be on the top of it.

There are 2 drain plugs, one under the engine, and the other on the bottom of the tank... open them both. 1 qt. will stay in the motor. A normal refill calls for 4.3 qts., but on later 1700s, that's been revised to 4 qts. only.

Yours is a '99, so the later and dreaded SVS problem should not be a factor here.

There's 1 qt. in the motor. It'll hold 2 more, and normally another 2 goes in the tank. That tank is much lower, and therefore, likely, smaller than stock, so start with 2 more for the engine... and maybe just 1 more for that custom tank.

Make sense?

ty ty .. one more problem solved .. i will close the other lines on the carb and see how it runs when i will have time to take it out for a ride

continuing with the list of problems that i have .. my battery is dead .. mosty due to the fact the i have no space for it and it sits laid on a side .. and it's not AGM ..
i was thinking to replace it either with a AGM VRLA battery which i can possition it laying down or with a li-phospate ballistic 12cell battery which by description rocks anything on the market these days
the pros are reduced weight and size and a whooping 410 CCA http://www.ballisticparts.com/products/batteries/12cell.php .. also a pro being that is only 50$ more expensive than a yuasa or varta AGM battery
please tell me if you know something about these cell batteries from personal experience
thanks alot

I got my agm battery from oreilleys. I could buy two batteries for the cost of one, and starts bike fine. I do know someone on here went with the lithium battery and loves it. Shop for the battery if that is the one you want, you can get from Amazon for 165 with free shipping.

Might consider a Lithium battery. They are smaller.
