Done with the "dealer" 1 Year ago
|
|
When I traded in my 03' I was told that I would only get 3k for it as it was "going to auction". Went on their site today and guess what? There it was for $2500 more in their showroom. Don't care how they make a buck but IMO I was lied to. Scratch another one.

Yep...dont trust them. I kinda got back at one last month.... we traded in our old jeep liberty on a new truck. Well, you know how the first thing they ask is how much do u owe on it? (Then they know what to offer you)...duh. Any way when we took it in I told them I still owed $1200 more than I really did..... long story short, they test drove it quick and wouldnt you know, he offered me exactly what I told him I owed. Then he called my bank to get the payoff and other info ...when he came back he said, hey! Thought u said you owed $4200 on that jeep? They told me it was only $2950! I said hell I dont know, my wife handles that stuff. He was stuck.. I saw his boss havin a talk with him in the corner a few minutes later...haha.

Besides, most sales people have only been employed for a month or two. Most likely you know more about the type of vehicle you have your eye on, then they do.
Huge turnover in that industry. Go back to the dealer a month or two later and that salesman that helped you might be long gone. It's an old fashion way of "bartering" that doesn't seem to work well anymore, where the sales guy has to go back and get "instructions" from the sales manager (whom you will never get to talk to directly).
Traded in an old suburban that they insisted was only worth $2500. "Hey, blue book is blue book", they told me...."it's not us, that's the value of that vehicle." A week later it's on their lot for $4500.
True enough, some guy comes along and haggles a grand down and believes he's getting a great deal, and THAT MY FRIENDS is how the car business works.

I don't think I will ever buy another vehicle that is less than 3 years old, and I WILL NOT trade in, I don't give a crap about the "tax savings" on trade in value or whatever.
I bought my last truck off a used lot. I looked it over, took things apart and looked at them, and even drove it with my box on the OBD-II. The air conditoning did not cool, and they told me it worked when they got it, and if it did not work with a can of juice, they would fix it. I told them scratch the AS-IS on the contract and write in the rider. They said they would. I offered them 650 bucks less than asking price, and they pushed, asking if I could come up with another 400 in a couple of weeks. I told them it was not about me having the money, it was about what I was willing to pay to drive it away. Bottom line, they got a fair profit, I got a decent truck, and they even stood up on that air conditioning. It worked, but I just had to call and see if they would. They told me "bring it in Tuesday and we can have it going Wednesday, no charge, that was the agreement. I was glad to hear that and told them I was testing them. They said that was OK, they wouldn't commit if they would not deliver. I sent 2 more people to them, and they were able to strike fair deals on vehicles. A rarity. At least I have a feel for what a decent dealer should act like up front. They did not shower me with history, and anyone that will let a guy show up with a bag of tools to look over a vehicle does not seem to have anything to hide. Like to find a bike dealer like that one day. Hell, I'd be one, but I would probably go broke!
