moreland and Erbman, what kind of acrobatics will I have to go through to get the old sensor out and the new one installed?

Mine was done under warranty, so don't know exactely, but have heard a allen wrench cut down to fit into small space helps. My dealer charges 1/2hr labor.

So, you don't have to pull the engine out to get to it? That's good news. My speedo and fuel gauge are wacky too - never wants to work, very intermittent. Probably the most frustrating issue with this bike.

I pulled the fuel gauge out and cleaned it - pretty easy to do. It still didn't work; then I jiggled the connector under the speedo and found that it would work. After replacing the connector with better connectors, it STILL didn't work. I was almost ready to sell the bike!

Now it just works when it wants to. I wonder if there is any electronics in the guage; the sensor is just a variable resistor. Seems like it should work.

Neils tech only charges 1/2 hour labor, mine didn't. Good luck.

My speedo stops working a lot of times in the middle of a ride. Sometimes it does the sweep when u initially turn it on and sometimes it doesnt. It seems to stop working more often when the bike is hot and i stop to get gas or something and get back on then there is no speedo. Then sometimes it will register 20mph when im going 60-70. Then sometimes it will start working again after a stop at a stop sign or something. As for the fuel gauge, it takes forever to show a full tank after a fill up and a lot of times it doesnt work at all. Ive done all of the prelim checks, ie connection points, fuses, wires, etc. Can anyone tell me whats going on?

I had the exact problem. I pulled my wiring harness apart, removed turn signal switch, changed turn signal relay. I ran out thing to try w/ out it getting expensive. Rev came up. he checked the fuses visually just as i had done. none of them were burnt or broken. he checked fuses for continuity. The fuse that controls guages, speedo, fuel sending unit was non conductive. we replaced the fuse. everything started working correclty. if you haven't already, change the fuse.

It hapened to me after i put a new wiring harness to a tow hich.found that it had worn a hole in the line and was shorting out,so you probably have a short or loose conection on one of the wires.Turn it on and tug and pull the wires all over the bike and see if you can get any movement on the rev gauge. You might have to lift up yhr tank to wiggle some of the wires.

I know the fuse is good, I will try the wide-pull check. But, that still doesn't resolve the speedometer issue. Where so I find that speed sensor? Do any brackets or covers need to come off?

It's kind of hard to see. It's in the back of the transmission. If you look down between the battery and rear cylinder you should see the wires going to it.
