STOP!!!! 12 Months ago
Stop what you are doing, if it ain't broke, it don't need no fixin. Stop with the anticipation that something is going to break down and you'll do a mod that you read on here to fix a potential issue that you think is a common problem. THIS BIKE DOES NOT HAVE ANY COMMON PROBLEMS!!!! Just because you read that 50 people have carb puke, does not mean it's a common problem. Got to take a look at the full picture. After looking at how many 1600 recalls there were, approx 30k bikes, lets say that Yammie builds 7500 Roadies a yr, So lets just use the 30k figure 1% would be 300 bikes, sorry, but I have not read from 300 people who have this issue, seems to me that well less than 1% have this issue. So, since when did less than 1% become a common problem? Even the SVS issue, well less than 1%. For the most part, quite a few create their own issues, you port a manifold, stick it on, and then there are issues. How many have bothered to check for leaks right after install? How many have gone to a dealer for SVS and dealer says, never heard of it. Well, some of these dealers might see only 5 or 10 roadies a yr, so with the SVS being such a small percentage to begin with, to me it's understandable that they haven't heard of or seen this issue. We see hundreds of people on here daily, and yes we hear of the same complaint, but for some of these dealers, the amount of people here daily, might take a dealer 10yrs to see that many. I'm fortunate that I live in an all yr ride state, and I have a dealer that knows this bike, they did somewhere around 200 tranny recalls, plus I know for fact, they read up on the RSR forum, they don't post but I do know they scan it. And how do I know this, because one day they referenced one of my postings. Nuff said.

Quite a few of you know me on here. I just have to put my 3 cents in (hey! inflation) as well a lot of you know I have a high mileage roadie (147k) Got a stock belt, will I change it? Yes, when it breaks and leaves me stranded, thats why I have towing. I can't and won't worry about the little things before they happen, I cross each bridge as I come to them. Do I carry a spare clutch cable? Heck no! again, I have tow service. Would I upgrade the charge system if all was working well? No, however I did it because of all the electrics I have and could not keep a decent charge rate to the battery and bought a battery every yr until I did the upgrade. Would I do the pumpless route, heck no, I still don't think that even the Grizzly valve is big enough. I know, I know, you'll tell me that your bike runs fine... to each their own, but I'll never be a proponent for it.

And another thing, if your bike is running good, and vacation is coming up, don't touch the flippin bike with mods unless you do it a month before. Can't tell you how many people screwed up their vacation because they just had to do this or that mod a week, or 2 days before they were ready to leave. Ya get in a rush, something breaks, or something else gets screwed, and you know, your dealer ain't gonna have that part in stock. Guess it becomes a vacation in the cage.

I don't know who it was, but recently I read that someone said they had carb issues and they wanted to port manifold and jet. Thats putting the cart before the horse. Fix it first before you do anything. what happens if it's not a carb issue? Guess what, you'll still have issues, but you'll probably think it was just what ya did, and you'll be going around in circles.
any way, I've said my piece or is it peace?

Right on. Aside from drilling my exhaust, mine is mechanically bone stock with no problems. Sure, i get the carb puke every now and then but only under extreme conditons. However, some things, like the front pulley, are worth checking even if it only happened to one. The only failure I've ever had is the fuel guage. I fixed that by doing away with it. My Roadie is a solid bike and I figure if I leave it alone it will stay that way.

don't know if you are getting the 8 flashes, but an easy fix 50 ohm 1/2w resistor stuck in the connector and wrapped with electrical tape. stops the flashes and keeps you at 3/4 tank. Then you never have to fill up with gas again. LOL

I have some friends in MI who own a stable of Indian motorcycles, some very nice, old stuff - some have been on loan to the Smithsonian and Henry ford Museums. I sent them a pic of my bike and when they replied told how they have a number of friends who own the R* ... proceeded to say how they are "trouble free" bikes. Coming from them I had to share that here.

Thanks for the 3 cents, Erbman. I can't see going pumpless either, but I do wonder about keeping a spare fuel pump in my tool kit just to be safe, but maybe it's just paranoia from what I read on here. Mine's a 2002 with the original still working great, but I do ride a lot out in the boonies, so what would you reccommend? Is it a good safety precaution or just something else to carry along?
