Doc, anything that got into the crankcase is probably trapped in the oil pump pickup screen where it'll stay until it either deteriorates and is passed to the next screen in the tank and from there to the oil filter or is physically removed. You should be okay unless there was so much of it the screen was clogged but you said you got most all of the grit out.

Over time those screens get some stuff in them anyway, that's why they're so big.

So don't worry, it's not circulating anywhere.

The oil is picked up in the crankcase and fed through one of the chrome tubes directly to the oil tank. From there it's picked through the other chrome tube and except for a small unfiltered bleedoff to the clutch is sent directly to the oil filter before moving on to the engine.

The important thing is to change the oil hot (immediately after shutdown) so any suspended solids come out with the oil.

I agree with mk... just change it once, and go. If it'll make you feel any better, do it again after about another few hundred miles.

Your filter probably did its job, and there's next to nothing left to be concerned about. Just change it and go.

As already stated you should be fine and are probably thinking about it so much that you are more aware of all the little noises these bikes make. You could use it as an excuse to install an oil pressure gauge to keep an eye on it. There is a write up in the tech section. This should ease your mind AND add another cool gadget to your bike - WIN WIN!

Thanks guys, it does make me feel a little better. As common as fried clutch is, it would stand to reason that they'd build in a means to keep it from destroying the motor.

Maybe I was just being a bit hyper-sensitive, because of the whole clutch issue, but it was actually a vibration, not a noise, that caught my attention. Interestingly enough though, I first noticed it *immediately* after putting in a pair of uber-earplugs. Without all the usual noises, the vibrations were certainly more noticeable. So I pulled over at the very next gas station to check the oil. Like an imbecile, I had a brain fart and checked the oil with the motor running. Well... let's just say I know for a fact that the oil pump is working just fine. It's a good thing my boots are oil resistant.

It's been about 500 miles since I replaced the clutch and I planned to drain the oil again anyway. I also wanted to run some sort of flush through the system, is Marvel Mystery Oil a brand name? Or is there anything else that would be better?

As far as cutting the filter open, are you suggesting to check for metal shavings or just the clutch material?

Thanks again all.

Marvel Mystery Oil, is a brand name. Most places that carry Lucas, and seafoam etc. will have it also. Comes in a red and black can if I remember correctly

Doc, you don't need to run any kind of a flush through the system. The oil is an excellent flush on its own.

The best way to find out what's in your oil is to send it here:

http://www.blackstone-labs.com/

And if you'll use the new style Yamaha oil filter you'll get many many times the amount of filter media provided by aftermarket brands. Plus, it doesn't bypass because there's even filter media on the bottom. You can see a picture of the filter on one of the Yamalube mats that's probably on the counter at your dealer.

Stopped across the border in AZ. to take our helmets off.
Couldn`t believe the amount of noise the engine made!
Like a fine "Watch" only "louder" Almost 29,000 miles now.

i dunno what oil you normaly run but if it were my bike i would go to wal mart and pick up some of that rottela oil alot of folks run and do a oil change after a 10-15 mile ride to flush all the old stuff out and repeat untill your satisfied you got it all out. right or wronge, in my head it makes sence and thats what i would do
==============

Good suggestion for a motor/crankcase flush post burning clutch plates but he's better off using chevrons delo 15-40 std dino (+ new filer) that has more zddp then shell rotella 15-40 std dino for better ft cam & lifter protection.

I'd run that for approx 200-300 miles (new oil filter should pick up any burnt clutch debries of any consequence) and then post the 200-300 mile flush change the oil & filter again going back to a motorcycle coil deisgned for air cooled v-twins with proper zddp lvl for the ft cam and no fric mods.
