Exhaust gasket question 11 Months, 2 Weeks ago
So I took off my Cobra longs and installed the bassani duals, I was looking over the parts diagram from the stock exhaust system and noticed there was a gasket on the head pipe. When I remored the old one there was none and I didn't put one on with the new one. Do I not need the gasket with aftermaket exhausts? Could this be the cause of the decel backfiring I was getting in the past?

I'm think'n, that you won't get by without a gasket. Whether your old pipes had some sort of a magic end or not I have no idea. The lack of a gasket, or a leaking gasket will cause the popping

Yes you need the gaskets if you reach in with your finger and pull on the hole I think you will find you had one in there. I recommend the OEM gaskets over the Felpro ones. The Felpro then to crush aftera while and cause the nuts to loosen causing leaks the OEM are copper coated and harder so they seal better. I lost a nut because the Felpro took a set and the nuts loosened the bike will barely run when that happens.

The gasket was probably in there in you just didn't notice. sometimes they blend in with the opening and are difficult to see. As was said without a gasket it would be popping so bad and running poorly that you couldn't ride it. I just bought new OEM gaskets yesterday and I was surprised to see that they were copper crush gaskets. Unlike the Felpro gaskets that fit but have a short life span. I think The OEM gaskets are worth the extra couple bucks if they are readily available to you.

Curt, you sure are typing fast today.

Yes and yes.

You always need the crush-able exhaust gaskets. Sometimes you can get away with re-using them. Sometimes (most times) you should replace them.

I will gladly add pics as soon as I have everything back together... My transfer case is being repaired and my tins still aren't back from painting missing prime riding
