The Tech Article, suggested using a piece of paper behind the knob(or I read it somewhere here). When the paper just slides without dragging, then your there. Do a bit at a time.

If you're plugs are looking a light Tan color and no heavy black deposits, you are running clean! My pipes are showing black soot as well, stick your finger into the end of the pipe (preferably when cold) with out much pressure on your finger drag it out. If all you can see on your finger is the acute finger print then you are good.
