Hmmm...have you trimmed the petcock intake tube? My fuel light used to come on right about the time I had to switch to reserve because of sputtering, but after I did that it comes on about the right time. Light comes on, I've got 20-25 miles safely, and take about 4.6 to fill. Been down to 4.8 to fill with no stumble on reserve.

Since the incline was uphill your conversion is even better than I thought. With the pump you would have been able to put a finger on the line exiting the pump and felt it speeding up and then slowing when it caught some more gas. It'll start doing that whenever the level gets really low and the gas is surging back and forth in the tank.
The vertical fuel filter is helping a lot by allowing the air to separate from the gas as the level gets low. With the pump though I have run 15 or so miles once the light came on before having to switch to reserve. Just as an experiment though because I think it's kind of hard on the pump to be running away like that when it gets a big gulp of air.

I'm think'n, that I may be ready for some testing. I don't know that I'm going to leave the lever on reserve right off, but I'm definitely going to see how far I can go on the main next time

I'm okay with switching to the reserve, instead of moding the main pickup(downdraft ) tube. I think I'll switch next time when it stumbles on the main when I'm on the flat, and not hot rodding, and see just how far it'll go before reserve is needed after the light comes on. Thanks for the 4.6 and the 4.8 numbers. There's something about driving around with a gas can strapped to the rack, looking like a storm refugee that lacks the whole 'kewel' factor

There are negatives to both, with one I have to exercise more caution. With the other, I carry the necessary items I might need, and either buy a spare now or later. Neither will allow fuel to flow when there isn't any available. One opens the left side of the motor up for better cooling, and reduces and or eliminates any issues I might have experienced with the dreaded "carb puke".
I have read the post where people say they have experienced starvation after going pumpless, and always wonder what the circumstances were.
Texasscott, said he had to do the filter mod because he was getting issues at about 1/4 tank. Mine needle was on the peg on the empty side yesterday, when this happened.
When I did mine, I installed the filter in as up right of a position as possible. I think that may be the biggest factor. The more vertical the installation, the better it performs.
I could see from what happened, that anyone who was running inclines and or grades and rolling through the twisties as well, might experience a problem, but more then likely, not before hitting the reserve. Hopefully, you'd be going downhill towards the gas station by then A properly placed fuel filter should almost(lawyer qualifier)get rid of the stumble...
Further testing will be on going down here at "58 Palms"(I may have missed a couple ) Florida

LIGHTNIN': you will figure out the reason for going pumpless when you pump goes South.
It will not happen in your driveway or anywhere else that you want to be...I've seen that movie.
I've been running my '00 pumpless for 4 or 5 years now. Wouldn't even consider going back.
I do run the petcock on reserve all thew time to take advantage of the added head pressure on the short side pick-up.
Just my $.02 worth.

Just for general information, there is no difference in the gravity fuel pressure between the regular pickup tube and the reserve pickup. The pressure at the petcock is the same regardless of which position is selected.

I tried going pumpless,, didnt work for me, when I tromped on it,, went back to the pump, carry a extra pump on trips right by the extra clutch cable in the saddlebag, still have the suzuki valve if anybodies interested... rd

I just put the grizzly in about two months ago pumpless awhile back no problems switch to reserve about @ 180 mile mark on odometer. Guess I'll find out when I get back to mountain road riding in Co. nice steep climbs will tell me whats really happening.

Is the move looking more and more like a reality?
I'm going to start taking some chances(I've run out of gas a few times in my life(only do to my fault once), and I don't want to repeat it with something that could ride off in the back of a pickup while I was away getting some exercise.
I'm using the Suzuki valve in mine, and have been fine so far. I've flogged it pretty good a time or two, and it hasn't choked yet....I'm not counting this incident  . I'm going to ride it hard a bit after the low fuel light comes on next time, before I switch to the reserve and see what happens.

okay not to bicker with the naysayers you have your reasons I had mine but Ill tell you bout my experience with this mod I went pumpless after two fuel pump changes in less than a month (not sure the reason they both went to heck) did the suzuki needle valve n seat then also with with pingle high flo petcock and filter.. results never will I ever go back to running that p.o.s. pump on my bike again. they are worthless in my opinion. since the switch ive never had a starve problem in any situation mountians (I live in 3500 ft area and ride there and higher), high temp, town riding, highway, anywhere no problmes with fuel whatsoever.... fuel low light comes on in plenty of time I have never been left anywhere due to running out or even having to switch to reserve. There ya have it best mod ive done to my bike in my opinion the fuel pump is an un needed headache.... take it or leave it

Is your cap vented and the rollover valve removed? Can I just drill the vent tubing without venting the cap?
