Not to hijack this thread - but I've been emailing back & forth with a tech rep from V&H who used to have a 1600 Roadie with V&H Long-shots. My original question was about changing to a Pro Pipe, which he suggested I don't for a couple of reasons. What he suggested was that I do what he did, which was cut 10" out of the middle of the stock baffles, weld them back together, and enjoy the boost in mid-range and top end as well as a slightly richer sound. Anyone here ever try that?
I'm curious what cutting them in half and welding them back together will gain you. They are pretty much just a baffled soft metal pipe. I don't see the advantage to cutting 10" out of the middle as opposed to cutting 10" off the end of one of the pipes. There doesn't seem to be anything on either baffle end that needs to stay, performance wise, other than the tail end that has the holes in it to let you attach them to the exhaust pipe.
If I remember right, when I received my V&H Longshot baffles they were 20", I cut 8" off in 2" increments until there was a balance between the sound I was looking for and enough back pressure to stop the blubbering I was getting on decel. With the full 20" baffle in the exhaust pipe it quieted it down more than my liking, but at 12" inches they sound pretty good and as mentioned got rid of the blubbering.

So, all you did was cut off 8" and they sound great? Are they considerably louder?

No, actually they are a bit quieter than they were without the baffles, but they don't blubber as much, and I still like the sound.
Yes, all I did was cut off 8", but I came to cutting off 8" over time. Granted, all on the same afternoon, and I did it by cutting off a chunk at a time. So there is only 12" of baffle left in my pipes and I like the sound.

Well, I made the cut, 8" just like Stocked. Sounds pretty good.
Where can I get a come-shaped tip, about 2" ID?

I'll be pulling mine out tomorrow and trying this as well. I've not seen the baffles out, and was only repeating what the V&H rep told me. Perhaps the baffles have changed over time? I was understanding them to be larger at both ends, not just at the securing end. Tomorrow morning I will know for sure and get this done before our ride to West Virginia through the forests and over the hills.

Just something to keep in mind about the longshots:
They really are looooong. They exit way behind you & your ears so what you hear is only a fraction of what others behind you hear. I always thought my pipes were quieter than anyone i normally ride with but more than one guy has told me that my pipes are every bit as loud as anyone elses pipes including the HD and SS loaded bikes. I guess it's like sitting in front of the wings on an airliner. Those engines don't seem so loud up front, but they sure are in the back of the jet.

this is a drawing of the baffles i made for my longshots. Reduced Db down to 91 and still has a decent rumble. It also appears that i,m getting another 2mpg since installing them.
