The "sweep" is it's own circuit. self check. I'm lazy, don't feel like reading the manual. Was a mind boggling day writing G-code.

I hear ya. But if it was a self check issue I wouldn't think the trouble lights would cycle correctly. I can't tell from my manual, but shouldn't the self check be verifying the validity of power and ground to the meter assembly? In aircraft systems such as this, if they don't "check out" it is the system, not the self diagnostic. If it is the self-diagnostic, other symptoms are usually apparent with the self check.

Mine went south about 6yrs ago, maybe 7. There was never the flashing code, nor on a speedo I borrowed from dealer for about 5days. And I can't really recall if it had the sweep issue or not. But it started as intermittent, and continued to slowly get worse, was under a yes WARRANTY, that was about 130k miles ago as well.

Still hunting around. No sign of any speed sensor, but I found this and can't find anything in the service manual or Clymer Manual that identifies it. However, there is a wire from it that runs to the area where everyone says the speed sensor is located.

Not sure what this is. Speed sensor is located approximately in the center (side to side) of the transfer case. If you look straight down between the battery box and the rear cylinder you should be able to see the wires going to it. Sensor is mounted in the transfer case. Hope this helps.

Well, I still don't know what that wire connection if for, but when I took the cover off, it was filthy. Red wire and black wire in there. That's all I know. Cleaned it up like new and recovered it.
Found the speed sensor. Damn.  All I could do was touch the allen bolt with the wrench. Looks like I'd have to take the exhaust down and loosen the oil tank just to get a better angle, but THAT still might not be enough. Wasn't up to messing with any of that until I read up on the oil tank.
The allen nut is at an angle where a specially curved allen wrench might be able to get to it, but then I have to wonder if I could ever remount it. 
However, did find the connector inside the left side cover that runs to the speed sensor. When I finally got it apart (what a bear), I cleaned it up with electric contact spray and then light-tested each of the three areas. Only getting a good light test from one of three connections. I'm guessing that the connector is bad, or there's a short somewhere between the connector and the fuse/battery. (Cleaned all the connectors while I was in there).

Behind that triangular cover is the neutral switch. pray that you don't get an oil leak there. You can see the top screw holding the neutral switch, but the 2nd screw is behind the transfer case, about a 3 to 4hr job for a 5 buck o-ring.

You might try checking the power and gound as I refered to above. Do you have a meter, or just a test light? I usually use my Fluke 73, but there are times when an analog meter is much better. Hope you get it ran down. At least you are onto something.

Yep. Saw the top screw holding the neutral switch and saw the other wire going into the opening at the top of the transfer case.
Since I value your opinion in these matters so much, Neil, I will pray.
