i had no slippage with my stock clutch spring but decided to do the barnett spring upgrade anyway...i was crunching second gear alot until i changed over to the barnett and now it shifts smoothe as silk...it was well worth the small effort it took to install it.. i will put one in my wife's 05 roadie this winter sometime just because i like mine so much...

Is this kind of upgrade something a novice could do? or should you have a lot of wrench time under your belt? I have 19,000 on my 04 and have no problems with it at all. When should I expect to start feeling
a slip problem that cable adj. wont fix?

Basic wrenching abilities would be helpful, able to follow simple directions too. If you can put a new belt on the bike or change your own oil, you might be able to do it.

Ya know depending on how you ride it may never slip, then it could start next week LOL. You will start to feel it in the beginning in higher gears when grabbing a good bit of throttle, usually from 3rd to 4th. Even then with a disciplined grip you could ride several thousand more miles with no issues...but we know how well that works

Yes this is something as a novice you could do. The tech article http://roadstarclinic.com/content/view/141/131/ is a great set of step by step instructions on how to do this and if you have a service manual it helps all the more.

Even tho the Barnett is a great upgrade, IMHO it is not a necessary upgrade (unless you just want to ) until that "if and when" yours starts slipping and even then there are other options available, I just happen to believe this is the best option.

OK here's the most important question you'll have all day....
can i lean the bike over 60 degrees or so and not have to drain the oil?
I've only got about 500 miles on this change and the damn yamalube aint cheap!

i started to slip in high gears a week ago.... now unless i'm gentle i think im getting power loss in all gears... barnett should be her anytime tho!!!

ooooo better go order that gasket!

You can always drain your oil into a CLEAN container and pour it back in after. I kinda doubt you would have much success laying it over, but I never tried it so not sure.

I did the clutch spring conversion last year and never looked back.. I did it on my own just following the tech article.

Very clever thinking. Definitely out of the box. Did you try this and what was the result?

"i started to slip in high gears a week ago.... now unless i'm gentle i think im getting power loss in all gears"

If you are slipping in all gears then I would sacrafice the oil and go ahead and do the upgrade. If it is like mine, slipping only in 4th or 5th when grabbing a lot of throttle, I would wait until the next oil change. My Barnett kit set on my shelf for a couple of months before I changed it.

As for as needing a lot of wrench time to do, no. If I can do it anyone can do it. I had planned on letting a friend who does have more experience do it but he kept putting it off so I took a chance and did it myself with nothing more than the tech article to go by. My only problem is I put a new "magnet" drain plug w/brass washer in and it leaks ever so slightly, maybe a drop about the size of a dime every few days. On my next oil change I will put the original plug back in to see if it stops.

Dang! Seeing this made me buy the clutch conversion, now I have to wait to buy my Big Touring seat. Woe is me!
