Reserve lever 11 Months, 1 Week ago
A different thread was talking about switching to reserve, and some people said they don't take it out of reserve. That got me thinking. I have never moved the reserve lever since I've owned the bike (3 years). It's where the PO left it. It's an aftermarket lever I think, it's all chrome and has no writing or arrows on it. I've always been careful not to run out of gas, or cut it close, because I don't know if on reserve or not. Can you help me out? Do you turn it clockwise or counter-clockwise to turn on the reserve? Thanks!

Well on mine it goes counter clock wise to reserve. Regular is at top position, reserve is at bottom position, off is in the middle. But since you have an aftermarket piece they may not be alike.

An obviously kept-in-the-dark nasomi asked There's a reverse lever???
The petcock lever, in the down position, is normal running. Turning the lever 180 degrees clockwise puts it in reserve (not reverse) mode. Midpoint is fuel shutoff.

Thanks guys!

Next question, when I put it in reverse, there seems to be a serious lack of power. I end up just pushing with my legs, is this normal?

It is not a good idea to "never" switch to reserve. The lower intake on the standpipe for the reserve side is where water hides. The last thing you want to do is "hit" reserve, switch to it, and your bike falls on it's face! Ask me how I know.

Routinely cycle to reserve, just to make sure you won't be screwed when you need that last gallon. do it on the way home, about 1/2 mile or so out, so it ain't no big deal to get it in the garage and drain the float bowl if it does die. If you want to be prepared for something like this on the road, carry an empty water bottle (tons of uses, a decent length, around a foot, of 3/16 hose, a long extension, 1/4 drive ratchet, and a 5MM Hex driver, and you can reach across to the bowl drain screw from the left side of the engine.

you know you laugh but i know one member here that is trying (or at least was) to make some sort of reverse kit for one of his roadies. the concept is pretty easy in my head, but making it fit would be the problem.

I've seen it before (on a goldwing), they use the starter motor to help push backwards.

I don't have a pingle valve. I don't know what it is but I think I have it figured out now and I can rarely get photos to work on this site. I don't use photobucket.
