My dad used to drive OTR, cross country long haul. When I first started riding he told me about semi retreads flying apart and split rims separating. To this day I don't pass a semi unless there's room for me ahead of him in my lane and then I gun it. I picture a tire coming apart every time. Did you see the Mythbuster's episode where they made this happen? I'll see if I can find it online. Scary sh!t.

I get in front of the as fast as I can. They really freak me out, 1 because I can't see, 2 because they can't see me, 3 because they can throw up any crap that gets between the wheels, and lastly they create road gates galore when the temps get hot.

I never thought about it until a dispatcher friend of mine told me about one of their drivers losing an entire set of duals off a trailer. I guess the axle failed. Set of tires/wheels bounced over the wall and into a cage windshield.

Around here we have trucks pulling huge containers of molten aluminum. Those things really freak me out!

i'm very cautious when passing a 18 wheeler. several years ago my grandfather was riding north on a four lane highway (2 lanes north, 2 lanes south). he was on the outside of the 18 wheeler when a woman pulling out of a drive was trying to beat the truck and made a left hand turn in attempt to get in the median. the truck slowed down and narely avoided hitting her. however, she never saw my grandfather, my grandfather never saw her. my grandfather struck her quarter panel. it was an accident that could have been avoided. sadly, her impatience cost my granfather his life. i have no animosity toward the woman. she made a mistake that we've all guilty of at some time or another. I learned a valuable lesson that day. Always pay close attention when your driving or riding near big trucks.

Nothin illegal about them on drives or the trailer. I would bet 70 % of companys run them on thier trailers. I lost 2 within 3 hours during that 90+ degree weather we had a couple weeks ago. Some of those chunks can weigh 100 pounds.
Be careful.

Not illegal in Virginia to run recaps on drive tires.

Re:A real a$$ pucker 12 Months ago
They are illegal on passenger cars in most states, but Federal Law is big trucks can run them on drives and trailers. Most modern carcasses can be retreaded twice. Idon't know about the rest of the world, but in eastern coal country, they run the 1st retread on the drive axles, and second retreads on the trailers. I pass truck and trailer combinations of any size as briskly as practical, and I always take the left side of the lane I am in to maximize my distance from the potential threat, and to get as clear of the front end blast off the truck as practical.

I do not follow anything with a trailer, or any large rental truck. Nothing says ameteur operator like Ryder or U-Haul! They can be downright scary.
