A torque wrench is the way to go in most situations dealing with a threaded aluminum housing, most involving a bearing pre-load, and pretty much any time you are dealing with a long (over 2" fastener, especially if you have an undercut shank (smaller shank between the head and threads than normal. The old Wrench arc method was 1.5 to 2 flats past contact on flat surfaces, and I think, 1.5 turns past with a lock washer, and lots of mechanics used it for many years. You will eventually, develop a feel for how much "stank" you are applying, but after over 20 years, I still just keep the torque wrench out when I'm working. If it's there, and there's no rush, might as well. Someone went to the trouble to figure out the ideal torque range. Gotta make them "train drivers" feel useful.

HERES MY REVIEW OF THE BARNETTS CLUTCH SPRING UPGRADE.

1. I read through the tech article twice and just went into the garage to get this dine.
2. I didn't even remove the floorboard, but the kickstand kill switch was kind of a pain to get off.
3. I laid the bolts ont he ground in the order i took the out. (clockwise or counter clockwise)
4. Once the smaller cover was off I smashed the larger cover with a rubber mallet a few times and it popped right off.
5. Quickly removed the old clutch plate thing that i'm replacing with a sexy purple one.
6. Installed the sexy purple one.
7. 30 minutes spent so far slowly breaking that down.
8. 1 hr spent slowly scraping off all the Frikken gasket material!!!
9. Re-installed covers.
10. Filled oil (why do i make such a mess doing this? i overflow everywhere. looks like i need a hazmat team in my garage!)
11. Adjust clutch at lever slightly.
12. Take bike around block.
13. At stop sign gratuitously hammer throttle and dump clutch.
14. Beat the snot out of it and recreate all areas taht caused you to slip prior.
(follow instructions at own risk. )

Pro's
fairly easy install.
Huge bang for the buck.
Will probably be a staple in all my future bikes.
(even with a passengaer on the highway uphill crankin on it i had no slippage so far.
60 or so miles on it so far)

Con's
Unfortunately I did not find a coupon in the box for a deal on tires. It is quite obvious this install has shortened the life span of my rear tire.


side note:
(i've had approximately 17 registered motorcycles in the last 16 years or so. I always do my own wrenching. I've never had to replace a clutch. I'm pretty excited about how painless this procedure was. Thank you all for all the help.
(now i get to go tell the guy at the dealership that thought i was crazy for not replacing the plates)


AWESOME man, glad you got it done. I keep telling people the hardest part about this job is the damn gasket removal

Its all the OEM replacement guys saying the Barnett is a more difficult install, when it IS NOT!!! It is just different

Can you provide a link to what you bought? I'm slightly confused on springs, clutch plate, and friction plates as well as the many variations on ebay.

I have only recently (last 200 miles) started noticing clutch slipping. I have 57K on my 1999 and while I just replaced the clutch cable (I've double checked it's adjusted where it needs be) I have more recently experienced slipping when I "gun" the throttle. Engine cranks, but that "jump" in the bike just isn't there like it was 300 miles ago. Bike feels like it's catching up to the engine and eventually get's there, but doesn't feel strong like it did.

Barnett SR-2 Pressure plate and springs kit.

Since you bike *IS* catching up to the motor still, more than likely your clutch discs and plates are in fine shape.

If you *MUST* replace you Discs and Plates, use Yamaha OEM. Some of, if not, the best available.

Make sure you get a left side cover gasket.

Barnett SR-2 Pressure plate and springs kit.

Since you bike *IS* catching up to the motor still, more than likely your clutch discs and plates are in fine shape.

If you *MUST* replace you Discs and Plates, use Yamaha OEM. Some of, if not, the best available.

Make sure you get a left side cover gasket.


So, likely I could use the springs. But if I buy the plate and spring kit (as noted) it wouldn't hurt. I'll keep the discs that are in there now.

All you need to buy is the Barnett SR-2 Clutch, it is your new spring. The new side cover gasket, and of course oil and filter. Best prices are on Ebay and that $127.00 is a good price for sure.
