Taller Gearing? 10 Months, 3 Weeks ago
Just curious if anyone on the forum has ever figured out how to raise the final drive gearing for better highway mileage and lower revs at speed?
Unless I'm riding 2 up I find 1st gear almost worthless and start in 2nd most of the time.
I'm still running a stock 33 tooth front pulley - wouldn't even want to go smaller as the bike pulls strong enough from the line to hit the limiter quickly in the first 3 gears, and I haven't even done a big bore kit yet.
So, is it possible to raise the gearing a bit?

the only other thing you could do is go to a 65th rear pulley but i think it would be to much strain on the motor for take offs (at least thats what i was getting from other members when i asked about it) if you did try it a shorter belt may be in order too.

I believe the 2001 RS has a 33 tooth drive pulley. That's as high as it goes.
YOu can get a 31 for more power but that's not what you want.

I know this isn't much help, but i find that interesting as I have the exact opposite issue. I feel my bike could use more power off the line and I can cruise the freeway at 70mph for miles before I realize I'm not in fifth. Then when I hit fifth, anything below 60mph feels like it's lugging. I have an aftermarket rear pulling from the previous owner... who knows, maybe it's bigger. If you ever come to Northern Calif, look me up and we can try a swap.

I have no idea if it would be interchangable, but the raiders rear pulley is 66 tooth. I got one to put on my strat for the same reason. For some reason strats are geared really low.

Just got back from a 3500 mile trip It`s said that our bikes are off by 5 MPH.
When I checked it against my cousins sporty, was pretty much spot on.
Unless his is off too 80 is my bikes sweet spot did it all day long on
Interstate 40 to TX. I just don`t find that the RPM,s are that high...tho you
will find yourslf checking on occation to make sure its in 5th.can`t see really
wanting to cruise any fast than 80...need to pass a truck...twist the throttle
and your gone Just too much hub bub about needn a 6th gear...my 2c

PS:I`m currently running Conti's

When comparing against my Garmin, my indicated speed at 70 mph is 67 on the GPS. Not too bad, especially since I am now aware of it.

Re:Taller Gearing? 10 Months, 3 Weeks ago
@ VegasDave - at 75-80 my bike feels like it could drop 2-500rpm and be happy. Since it doesn't have a tach I'm just guessing, but I geared my last HD higher for this same reason. My drag racing days are behind me, with the exception of smoking the occasional HD just for fun
A 6th gear would be great but probably cost prohibitive so I don't think that'll be happening.
That's why I was looking at final drive options.
As for bogging off the line - I can bark the rear tire hard off the line and again shifting into 2nd. Why would I want lower gearing?

I'm one of the few that think like you do, Pastor.

While I don't think that my RS is straining, even at at 80 mph, I do often find myself looking for a 6th gear, even as low as 65 or so.

Hope you find the answer.

Re:Taller Gearing? 10 Months, 3 Weeks ago
I'm doing some traveling this summer & fall and am taking the 31T pulley off. I just ordered a 33t one and will try that. My stocker was 32t and was a pain and I was always shifting betwiin 4th & high.

The 31 was great for the local hill country riding thats here but was really buzzing the engine (around 3,000) on the Maine trip last month, On the return leg anyway where I had to make time and pound the interstates.

When this tire is shot I will be going darkside which will be a little taller and should really eat up the highway.
