Fb, I keep thinking back to the fuel needle movement when I was engaging and disengaging the connector under the odometer housing. Like you said, might just be something loose there or needs to be replaced.

I'm going to monkey with the speed sensor, first, and then go from there doing some backtracking -- and that connector is on the list.

Let us know how you get the Speed Sensor out. It looks like it is gonna be a real bee-otch to get to.

I always try to recap, JD -- good or bad. The bad at least tells people what NOT to do.

Erbman mentioned in another thread about a "shortened" allen wrench regarding the speed sensor, so that alone told me that it wasn't going to be fun.

Thought I was going to have to replace mine. Looked at it and immediately thought NOT FUN. Hope you have small hands. Not much room to work in there.

just an idea here but why if it was the speed sensor would he not be getting the sweep on both the fuel and speedo seems to me being as they are on seperate plugs we would be looking for some reason that would cause them both to fail???? Im gonna lean toward a ground issue maybe not really sure but just thought id throw my 2 cents in might help.

That's what I said earlier. Since it is both, the commonality is power and ground to the meter from one plug. The speed sensor wiring should just be a reference voltage from the meter going out through the speed transducer, and producing a frequency count for the meter through another wire to convert to a given deflection of the needle for that frequency.

Check for battery voltage at the red/green wire on the meter connector. Check it to a known good ground, and then to the black wire at the plug. Check for very low resistance between the black wire and known good ground. The Red/Green comes from the backup fuse, and is the power source for the meter.

Yeah, what he said!! I didn't really understand a word of what JD wrote but, it sounds smart!

The fuel gauge will return to normal after a few miles of riding, that's what it takes.

As far as the speed sensor, funny thing, it only does it's thing in 5th gear, as far as readings, as per service manual. Sometimes sensors break down under load only. Thats why I'm not too keen on only resistance readings on some of the electrics, might appear fine with not being turned on, but breaks down under load. And you can't take a ohm reading while hot.

I agree Erb, but even when my fuel meter is acting up, it still tests proper with a full sweep. That's what makes me think that checking the power and ground inputs might be a good first move.
