I am getting my info from a 2004 issue Yamaha manual. Scott pointed out some problems the other day, so if he chimes in with different wire markings, just be advised he has more up to date data than me!

I'm also thinking that the problem is internal to the meter. The fuel gauge will sweep even if the green float connector is disconnected. The speedo should sweep even if the speed sensor is disconnected. Those sweeps are internal startups within the chips that control the speedo and fuel gauge.
One way to tell if the speed sensor is okay is to notice if the odometer is still registering and whether or not it goes through its reset routine - the 8's display.
Sadly these things don't last forever. My speedo has failed to sweep a few times lately. When I turn it back off and rap the glass everything is back to normal again. Even with the discount I get working at a dealership I dread having to buy a new meter.
I for one will be interested to know if you find a loose connection or solder joint that's causing the problem.

Ricohoc have you disconnected the battery? Mine acted funky once after I removed and then reinstalled my dash, I disconnected the battery over night and all is well.

ts-1, I had to do that "rap the glass" occasionally leading up to all this. After taking out the odometer to replace the bulbs, it's like it has entered a new phase of malfunction.
However, it DOES go through the reset routine with the 8s display.
On Tuesday and Wednesday (tommorrow and the and the next day -- it's Monday night here), I'm going to get crackin' on that meter. After reading jd's suggestions again, it has begun to make more sense regarding the source of this.
Booster, I'm going to go outside and do that right now before my head hits the pillow. In the morning, all may be right with the world -- or at least my odometer.

Well, Booster, your idea worked -- and it didn't work.
Got a needle sweep from the fuel needle, but nothing from the speedo. However, I did change out the batteries before I did the test.
Voltage on the battery I took OUT was 12.84. Voltage on the battery I put IN was 13.65. Maybe the battery switch had something to do with getting a sweep. I don't know enough about it to be certain.
Just got through with the workout at the gym, going eat and come back and get on that odometer board/wiring.

 I'm having similar problems with my speedo. Been happening for almost the whole year that I've owned my RS. It has been intermittent and usually a rap on the glass causes the speedo to sweep. Saturday I disassembled the meter housing and unplugged the connectors. When I put it back together the speedo wouldn't sweep. Not even with a rap on the glass. I finally got it to sweep again but only occasionally, always with a rap. Last night it wouldn't sweep and the speedo didn't work at all until I took off from a triffic light and rapped on it under 20mph. Then it would usually work. I tried it once above 30mph (I was in 3rd gear) and it only would register up to 20mph no matter how fast I was going.
Since rapping on the housing unit will sometimes make it work, doesn't that mean that it is a contact problem? I'm not an electronics person but it has been my experience that when you rap on an electrical component to get it to work it is usually a corroded or loose contact point somewhere. I just tried to disassemble the whole unit and check for any connectors that may be loose and was unable to get the cicuit board completely away from the speedo face. I think taking the gas and speedo needles off would have allowed it but they did not easily come off and I wasn't wanting to force them.

StarSarge: You are correct in your assesment that it is normally an issue with a contact, and it seems to be a base connection, I.E. power or ground sourcing, as we discussed on the earlier pages. I would love to have an old meter assembly to work on, and see if it's possible to find the root cause, and possibly repair one. They cost a bit much just to throw away. Anyone got a "dead" one in the far northeast corner?

I'd really like to know a fix for this. I don't have any electronics equipment and wouldn't know how to use it if I did. It has to be a simple fix, though. I priced a new meter assy on Bike Bandit and it was $600. That is a lot of money to fix something that is probably just a bad connection.  I found meter assemblies on eBay for less than $100 but only for the Warrior. Not the same unit.
