"Looks worn" is not a technical secification. Ask to see the bend in the forks demonstrated , ask to see the wear and acceptance criteria on the dogs, and ask for wear demonstration on the gears. The recall does replace 4th gear, and it is common to see cutting at the shaft area of the gear from what I understand. In order to demonstrate a worn straight cut gear, a rod of a specific daimeter is placed in the gear's valley, and usually the specification says if it goes below the level of the top on either side, it's worn out. The pinion shafts should be easy to see if they are tore up, but the groove will have a dimensional tolerance. Always check grooves with feeler gauges, never with a caliper, that way you are always parallel with each side.
Don't bite on anything without being convinced. If you are on the fence, ask if you can have another technician of your choosing come in and review the parts. And above all DO NOT pay any additional labor on this. the shafts get un-stacked for the recall to get 4th off the pinion shafts, and the carb comes out of the valley and jugs come off, so there is absolutely nothing beyond parts involved.

If they refuse 3rd party review, I'd be worried. Just don't let them pick the guy. May be Curt??? or, See if you can get the service manager from Al Lamb Honda or High Five Cycles to look at the stuff for you on his lunch break or something. I don't know the guys, but I know the shops have a pretty good reputation.

Good Luck, and go armed with as much knowledge as you can muster.

It does take 2-3 weeks to get the kit from Yamaha, so your wait time is not abnormal for what you're having done. When I had mine done they said my cam was showing bad signs of wear. I said bolt it up with the recall done and i'll pick it up when they said $1300 to repair. I picked it up and replaced everything on my own for $400. They like to "add on" repairs to recalls I guess.

They probably can't "beat the book" on the recall, meaning They cannot accomplish it in the time Yamaha will pay for the job to be done, so they try to sweeten up the sale. Same reason they tell sportbike guys they can do a 15000 mile service for 179.00. It's to sell you other shit. Everyone knows you can't even do the valve check i 3 man-hours, much less everything else you're supposed to look at.

If it was shifting just fine before you took it to them... tell them you LIKED the way it shifted perfectly before they tore it down, and to just put it all back together, with the new oil pump drive, at the proper retail price only!!! (which is about $71)

After you take delivery, and all is working fine, write them a nice letter about how you are a registered user of the 45,000+ member Road Star Clinic, and that you shared your lovely experience with those crooks at that stealership with all of us here, and that we are now fully alerted and on to them.

So...... I go up there to look at my parts. Yes the manifold has some cracks, not all the way through. Thats ok, I'll just probably get one from curt. Not a big deal! ..

First I am gonna say that the tech wasn't even there to show me the parts. Other techs were trying to show me what they thought the problem was.

So they show me the gear and shaft that gets replaced during recall. Then they try to show me the other gears. The teeth on the gears were good, just the three side notches had a slight sign of rubbing. Didn't look bad to me, just slightly discolored. I don't think anything is wring with the gears. That's just my opinion.

Then they show me the shift forks. Again couldn't show me the actual bend in them. Just at the face of the fork on the face in four points on each one, it was slightly discolored. They say the dis coloring is do to the fork being bent and rubbing. Again I didn't see anything other than normal signs of wear.

Now, I am no yamaha tech. I am an auto tech of 12 years. I am ASE certified, and one test away from being a L1 master tech. So I have seen my fair share of bad parts. In my opinion, I don't see anything that is an issue. But again I am nit a yamaha tech.

So like you guys always do. Let me know your opinions. And as always, all you guys on here are kick-ass. Thanks for all the help.
