Neck bearing upgrade. 10 Months, 2 Weeks ago
|
|
|
I was thinking in the near future of flushing and changing out my fork oil. I would think this would be a good time to change out the neck bearings to the tapered type. Am I correct? Is this hard to do? Any links, etc?

A lot of guys have been going to "All Balls" bearings. I dont know what they have but a lot of guys swear by them.
I'm gonna change mine out this winter and thinking about All Balls.

Hardest part is getting the lower bearing off the tree. Rest is tedious ( aka take your time). I used Allballs bearings and dollops of marine grease when I put it back together. Don't trust the white lithium Yami uses. If you're just gonna do the bearings not a lot has to come off (steering head nuts, handlebars, basic stuff. If you're gonna do the forks also most everything on the front comes off. Study it for a while. You'll see a clear pic in your mind. Tree and/or oil.

I assume you have to pull the forks anyway to do the bearings, right?

The front end can come off as one unit to get at the bearings. Preferably the front wheel/fender is off. Then the bars followed by the neck nuts ( ). You don't have to pull the fork tubes at all. You're only dropping it far enough to get the steering stem clear of the neck. The lower bearing is press fit and interesting to get off (heat?). There's a race in the upper and lower neck. The top pops out with a long screwdriver in from the bottom. The bottom is a little harder. They'll get replaced but try and not scratch the race area. To get the new bottom one on use a pipe the same diameter as the inner bearing cone with an identical diameter small piece of PCV pipe for cushion. The race/bearing on top is easy to get in. The lower should be put in the freezer overnight to shrink a bit. Use a hard plastic hammer head and a piece of wood for the job. 3# mall is overkill. Study the front end and it's operation. Picture what does what and it'll become clear (grasshopper).

GP do you have a part number?
Neck - Top - NSK HR32005XJ-L- LC MM
Bottom - KOYO HI-CAP 32006 J RRS
Think I cross referenced these on the Allballs site.
Tim B would be better on this.
