Oil Consumption/ Drilling Stock Airbox 6 Years, 1 Month ago
Hey Guys I appreciate all the comeback and good advice so far. Hate to bug everyone again but I do have two more questions. First is I recently did a 650 mile run round trip on my new 06 R*, 75% freeway at 85 avg speed. I checked oil after this and used up a 1/2 of a quart. Is this average oil consumption for that range and speed? Second question is I have put on 2" Cobra Drag Pipes(Baffles cut in half) and rejetted with Dyno. Cannot afford BAK at the present time but I do need more air with my set up. Does anybody know if its Ok to drill holes in the back of the stock Airbox ? I realize I would have to drill below the filter mount. Would this void factory warrenty? Thanks In Advance, Ride Safe and God Bless

if you drill the stock air box, be prepared to jet... the stock box is very restrictive and opening it up will effect your mix, usually just changing the pipes you don't have to rejet the main jet.. but changing the box you will .. a lot of times a dealer will say they are checking the jetting and adjusting as needed and they don't really make to many changes.. I was adding a air box to a friends kawasaki and he had a power commander added when he had staight pipes put on, and much to his surprize when we plugged the power commander into the computer the programming was set to the stock setting... did he need the power commander? maybe... but probably not... does he need it now? YES... so in the long run it was worth the investment... but the problem is that the dealer either didn't know if he'd need it, or he knew it and decided to charge my friend anyways (at least the power commander was there)..

if you think you've been rejetted, you can take your bike for a run with the stock air cleaner cover off, back plate and filter still intact, just remove the chrome cover (don't ever run without a filter)... if you're way to lean the bike will buck and sputter when you try to throttle it up... if you're just a little lean you will notice a hesitation or sputter when really laying on the throttle on the high way - I personally found the paper air filter did not provide enough restrition for the stock jetting... but if the dealer jetted you a tad bit rich (as they tend to do) you will be able to make the change without getting into rejetting.. remember the roadstar won't run lean... either it's just a tad lean, perfect or way to rich... you will feel the bike not running right if you're to lean... so if she runs good... you're good ... now, if you wondering if your to rich... thats another story... ~guido

Post edited by: davehrn, at: 2006/04/29 09:03

as to the oil consumption... I'd check the oil the same way everytime... warm up about 5 minutes after sitting all night... blah blah blah, because the roadstar has oil in the crankcase and in the oil tank... I'd be afraid the oil is being retained in the crankcase when you find it a bit low, then you add oil and now you've got to much.. 1/2 quart over 600 miles is NOT NORMAL... I'd think if you lost that much you'd find a puddle under the bike ala harley... or it'd be smoking so bad no one would run with you... do not over fill... over filling has been suspected in causing sticky valves and the infamous roadstar rattle ~Guido

Just wanted to add if you do decide to drill the stock air box, and I'm not recommending that you do it or don't do it. Then check out this first http://www.geocities.com/fatbike4/Fat_Bak.html .
