Oil Drain Plugs 6 Years, 1 Month ago
I just did my 1st oil change using the RSC tech tip as a guide. When I reinstalled the oil drain plugs, was I suppose to use a crush washer or gasket or o-ring?

Post edited by: toenee b, at: 2006/04/29 03:40

If the original washer is in good shape just reuse it. If not buy a new one. Stay away from the o-ring type and the nylon ones ( if you squash them to much or over torque you will leak oil) I prefer the metal crush washer. Ride Safe and God Bless

I didn't see a washer when I removed the plugs. I didn't think about the washers until after I had reinstalled the plugs. When I dumped the old oil into a recycle container, I didn't see any washers. Am I gonna be ok running without washers or do I need to change oil all over again?

Good Morning Topher. Actually the plug has a soft crush washer on it. When you remove the plug the washer is crushed so thin that you cannot barly see it with the naked eye. So it was probaley still on the plug. When I did my first oil change mine was still in tact so I just left it on there.

Well, that makes sense. It looked like the bolt was flanged, but I guess it was a washer. Anyhow went on a 150 mile jaunt today and checked the plugs and filter for leaks. Bone dry. Now, that's a good thing.
