This is my first post because I just bought my brand new midnight star yesterday I have a quick question because this is the first carb'd anything I've ever owned before.

I'm looking to mod the exhaust on my bike, I've shopped around and for my price range and for looks that I like, I'm very interested in the Vance and Hines ShortShots pipes

Has anyone put these pipes on their bikes? Likes or dislikes? Also I'm planning on waiting to break in the motor before I do this exhaust mod, however I'm not sure what the "standard" break in period for this motor is (the 1700). Is it around 1000 miles?

Also the last question, if I put this specific exhaust on my bike, how extensively will I have to mod it carb-wise. Also if I take the baffles out will I have to adjust the carb again as well? I'm not very familiar with carbs or carb terminology so any help would be greatly appreciated, however, I am a tech professionally, I work for BMW, so I'm mechanically "inclined" but I've been working on fuel injection my whole life and this carb thing is a whole new animal that I've never really had to interact with until now Powercommander I miss you already

I appreciate any help or advice you guys can give

It should be noted also that I ride my bike everyday, it's my transport to and from work, I don't know if this makes a difference or not for the exhaust's viability or not

Well, much like you, I also own a 2006 Roadstar Midnight Silverado. The standard breakin period is 600 miles. Change the fluids at this point, which has probably already been recommended by the shop where you bought it.

The Vance & Hines pipes you mention may or may not require rejetting of the carb. This information will probably come with the pipes. Understand that when you change the little things like pipes, air box, smog control, etc., that the bike runs leaner. I changed the air box and pipes at the same time, thus rejetting the carb as recommended by Kuryakyn. However, I also removed the smog control stuff, which was not mentioned by Kuryakyn, and I was having skipping and sputtering problems at 1/4 throttle or less. This was solved by increasing the pilot jet to a #40.

Just remember, more air = leaner condition. Free flowing pipes = leaner condition. Jet richer one step at a time until the problem goes away. It takes some trial and error for each bike, but the pipe instructions should give you good starting points. Don't forget the air-to-fuel adjustment needle underneith that little hidden cap in the back of the bottom of the bowl.

If you are unfamiliar with carbs, then I'd recommend you read the Tech Tips section. There are some excellent intro articles there.

Generally you don't need to re-jet when adding just the exhaust but an adjustment of the PMS (&quot;air-to-fuel adjustment needle will most likely be required&quot may be needed.

Depending how early you leave for work may influence whether you want to put on these pipes.

I put the V&amp;H Shortshots staggered on my 05 * and love the look and sound. When I first put them on I didn't do a thing to the crab and the bike ran great, for the short time I was able to ride it. It was in Feb. and being in NY you don't get alot of good riding days at that time of year. Since then I have done the fuel pump removal mod. and rejetted. I'm still working on getting it as close to perfect as I can, but hay it's early yet. I got my pipes from a local dealer and they where about 20 cents cheaper with sales tax then what V&amp;H listed them for on there website before shipping. I called V&amp;H before I bought them and they where the ones that told me to try a dealer first as I would probably get a better price. As for the sound, yep they are a little loud I guess, but compared to some of the bikes around here not real bad. My neighbors who live across the road from me tell me my bike sounds great (and they don't ride) and a couple of the others give me dirty looks.

Cool thanks for the advice guys, I'm still looking up info on this PMS business and other carb stuff. Learn something new everyday. I'm working off some milage on the bike more than I normally would (to and from work) I took a nice cruise up highway one through malibu this afternoon and it was sooooooooo relaxing, definately a far cry from my last bike (an R6) and I'm so much more at home on my roadstar, definately made the right decision switching them out
