Battery tending 4 Years, 5 Months ago
Any good thoughts on battery tending over the winter when bike is in the cold? I usually take the battery out, storing it warm and giving it a trickle charge once a month or so. I've heard leaving it on the bike and using a float charge is also good... Welcome comments!

I take mine out. It spends the winter under my kitchen sink hooked up to a battery tender junior. There are people who leave the battery in the bike but I figure as long as I ain't ridin it why not take the battery out and keep it warm.

Battery tender for me in an unheated garage. Wally World had them for $17 last fall.

A trickle charge is always better than nothing. I've got one on mine. IMHO if you're going to trickle charge it, I'd just leave it in the bike.

By the way, I just have to tell you that the 2000 Road Star Silverado Black/Silver combo is my all time favorite bike. I looked for almost a year and could never find a good condition used one for sale. So, I settled for an all silver 2003 with the thoughts that maybe one day I would have it painted to be black and silver.

Welcome to the clinic and congratulations on having the best looking bike here!!!

I pulled the battery from my bike about two weeks ago and hooked it up to a battery tender. The battery is setting in an unheated, but insulated garage, so the temperature stays well above freezing. From everything I've read and heard, using a battery tender is the way to go. They are fairly cheap and easy to use. For the $25 to $35 dollars you'll spend on a battery tender, it seems like a good investment. I look forward to dropping a fully charged battery into the bike next spring and starting the bike up with no problems after it's long winter nap.
