Hitting The Rev Limiter 4 Years, 5 Months ago
Can one of you technical types here tell me why hitting the rev limit helps keep the dreaded SVS at bay? I do it because I've read here that it's a good thing to do, but now I've wondering why it's a good thing to do.

Thanks in advance,

M7

The rpms at that level keep things clean. It's a shake down of the valve train, and does seem to help. Lots of folks do just Cruise on these puppies, and a S L O W moving twin really allows the carbon to build. I don't hit mine but on occasion, but I ride briskly all the time. For those that don't , it is encouraged to move some of that carbon build up out. That make any sense? BB

BB said it all. Same thing goes for your car. It's good to wind it out every now and then.

I remember growing up and dad always did something every now and then with all the cars we had. He called it blowing the sut out it .

Back before all the electronics were on cars he was one of the best shade tree mechanics around. I just thought he hadn't grown up and wanted to see how many cars he could pass on the interstates as he would lick his finger and make a mark on the dash board.

Out of curiosity, does anyone know of a study that actually proved that "blowing the carbon out" actually happens when you push an engine to higher rpms? I mean we all have heard that claim for years, and we all like the idea of having a "reason" to tromp on the gas. However, in the end I've never seen anything that showed this "technique" actually does anything besides giving the driver the thrill of going faster.

I don't know of any sponsored research or anything like that. Some pretty knowledgeable people say it works. I guess it come down to - If you don't think it will help don't do it.

Well, My pop used to call it an "italian tuneup" and I can say this..In the past when searching for a cheap used car, I would look for one driven by older folks as usually they were in better shape..after buying it I would run it up and you could see the black smoke coming out the tail pipe...after doing this a couple of times, it would no longer smoke, and idled alot better..I always assumed I was blowing the carbon out..no proof tho....

I had a 99 crown vic (company car) I got that was driven by a guy who retired and drove like an old lady. It had 110,000 miles on her and ran so so. Driving to Las Vegas about a month later a guy in a honda civic came up on me and slowwed down trying to get me to open'er up so I floored it and it made some odd knocking noises hesitated and backfired a huge poof of black smoke out the back and she took off! She ran great after that! oh yea I did beat the civic at 120mph peged speedo
I've got an 05 R* with the dyna 3000 with the rev set to 5500 rpm, 9800miles and no SVS...

For what its worth...
Steven
