AIS removal? 6 Years ago

I've read on alot of the forums on here and delphi about people talking about removing the AIS and also removing their fuel pump, A) what is the AIS, how do I remove it, and what advantages does this provide?  what advantages are there to removing the fuel pump?
Also kinda stupid question but I left my fuel cock set to on over the weekend and started it up on monday just fine, is there any real advantage to turning it to off when I turn my bike off?
Stupid questions I know but once again, not really familiar with carb'd motor's

As far as the AIS goes...it is the Air Induction System...removing it will reduce the backfiring on decel, so I understand and cleans up the look of the engine. Me, I have put a moratorium on tinkering for now. The bike runs great, gets super gas mileage and I am in the "why mess with success" mode right now.  I figure if I want to go screaming around on a bike..I'll crank up the 1982 GS1100E.
As to the fuel cock being left on...all I can say is I have been riding nearly 30 years and cannot ever recall turning it off  This includes my '05 R* since day one  In the old days, a few of the bikes had a "prime" setting on the petcock and that would dump gas continuously into the carbs...that you didn't want to happen.

AIS is removed for looks. If you leave it on when you change pipes you'll hear popping.
I agree with Ted re the petcock .... never have turned mine off. However, you should be aware that if the needle valve gets dirt in it and it sticks open gas will leak out of your carb. Some have also experienced gas leaking out of the carb on hot days after the bike's been sitting after a ride.

OK, I found the instructions (sort of) to remove the AIS, so I think I'm going to go ahead and do it today, after removing it though, is there ANYTHING else I need to do to the bike to make it run right? Adjust PMS adjust carb? It makes it looks like I remove an electrical connection, will this mess w/ anythign electrically? thanks again guys from the noobie ^^

Fuel pump ....
Some want to remove the complexity of having another 'part' that may breakdown.
I fried my pump and went to a Purolater pump/regulator combo under the right sidecover. I found the Purolater pump 'ticked' continuoulsy so when the vacuum pump solution was posted, I jumped on it. It has work for me.
I'd leave well enough alone unless it bothers you or you want to loose some weight
On the other hand, a lot of guys relocate the pump to another location to open up the left side of the engine. But that's another story.

Cool thanks for the help doc, I read all the tech tips on AIS removal and just ordered my kit from Baron for my 05 midnight, so when my V&H longshots get here I won't be popping on decel ^^ The fuel pump thing isn't an issue for me so unless my burns out (outside of 3 years) I think I'll hang onto it, btw I did my first re-fuel and it seems I'm getting about 35 to the gallon, on breakin is this about right? or should I be bring this back to the dealer to have them tune it correctly
Also WAAAAAAAY stupid question, but do I have to turn the cock to reserve, to fill the reserve section of the tank, or does it all just fill regardless of position

Hard to say. If you don't ride hard light to light, don't blip the throttle at lights to attach attention  , etc., then I'd say it still a little low.
If you live on the west coast in an area of high humidity you'll get lower gas mileage than if your bike was in the dry central plains.
Hope you get the picture.

No. There is no partition in the tank. The petcock has two tubes (outlets) attached to it. The higher outlet is the normal position. The lower outlet is the reserve.
