Making pipes quieter 4 Years, 5 Months ago
I added V&H Staggered Shortshot pipes to my '01 R* as part of changing the Silverado into a bobber. I picked the Shortshots because I loved the looks of them. When I finally completed the bobber project I fired up the motor and almost split my eardrums in the closed up garage. I opened the garage door, put on ear protectors and tried again. Still way too loud. I knew the pipes would be loud but this was just too much. I called V&H tech support to ask about quiet baffles and was told my new pipes had the quiet baffle installed when shipped. I thought I had just wasted $300. My neighbors have been very understanding with my sometimes bike testing on the street and in the garage, sometimes late at night, (six other motorcycles) but this level of noise would be pushing the limits.

After consulting with my bike buddies and a couple of friends who build hot rods, I decided to try and add additional baffles in the existing baffles. I removed the existing baffles, cut almost in two with a hacksaw in two places and added a piece of steel drilled with 1/8 inch holes about 1/8 inch apart into the hacksaw slots. Then brazed the cuts back together. I couldn't believe the difference. There is still a good putt to the sound but not offensive. When WOT the sound is still not obnoxious but a good putt.

If someone is trying to make their pipes a little quieter, there is a way.
