Re:SVS paper 4 Years, 5 Months ago
I think too much oil goes a long way. I got my bike used so I don't know about the previous owners practice but when mine started messing up I found this site (as well as others) and started going down the list of fixes. I got fed up and went to the dealer and asked them to fix it. They did for a rather substantial fee. A few months later it started sticking again and they had way too much oil in it. I just got it back from them today and they this time they put stiffer springs in it and they didn't charge me a thing. But guess what? I got home and checked the oil and she's filled to the rim again. I'm going to drain and refill it. So if you depend on the dealer for oil changes better check it, cause this could be your problem

YES the dealers probably are the worst...

Although my Yammi was Ok when I brought it home..

When I picked up my 89 harley.. then drove it into a nearby parking lot after only a few miles to show off the bike to my buddies....

To my dismay a BIG pool of oil around the kickstand...pulled the dipstick and she was filled to the brim...pukin out the bottom of the air filter...

And this bike came from a dealer that was in business for a least 5 years..

Kids or the inexperienced doing the prep work???

Well...man I am nervous with dealers working on my bike...

Is just me, or do we really know very little about SVS? I think all the information being put together is a great idea, but its all the same things I have been reading for a couple of months now. It will be nice if and when Yamaha realizes they actually have a problem as address it. Not just on new bikes but for the loyal following of people currently riding their product. In the mean time, this paper addressing preventitive measures seems like a great resource. Keep up the good work.

First of all, a hearty thanks to Musky for taking on the mission of consolidating the information provided by this group on the topic of SVS. You've done a great job and the information will be a big help to forum members and visitors to the site in the future.

However, Javawave brings up a good point, it really does appear the information we have on SVS is based more on anedotal experiences rather than hard facts. One thing that seems to be in question is how prevalent is the SVS problem. I think Doc pointed out that forums like this tend to highlight problems which is to be expected.......how many people log on and start a thread to say, "Hey, I don't have SVS or SVS-like symptoms!" That said, it would be interesting/useful to see how many R* owners have experienced SVS or SVS-like symptoms.

I'm a member of another forum that has the ability to "poll" its members on various issues. I haven't seen any polls used on this forum and was wondering if that is an option?

Again, thanks Musky for all your efforts!!!

Morning Yakman

A poll here would be statistically meaningless since the traffic here is not that heavy. At best it would give a hint. And even a on a large forum you wouldn't hit every Roadie owner. My opinion anywho

What hard facts would you like to see? Most of what we are writting is based on what has happened to people who have had it. You could ask Yami how many SVS cases they have fixed. But I doubt they would tell you You could ask on all the forums but there are people who read and never post so they might have had it and fixed it without anyone ever knowing. I'm open to any ideas that will make this article better.
