Miller, I take it "open K&N filter" means something other than the stock box with a K&N tossed in, Right? If that's the case , it has been jetted. They don't run worth a hoot with an open air box (BAK, hypercharger, Etc...) without being jetted. It could be too rich , and the only way to know how it's set up is to either A. get the info from the PO if they even know how it was set up , or B. get in there and find out yourself. There is a C. which is take it to a shop, but that has been known to end badly round here, as that's where rich Roadies come from. Try some of the suggestions made, and if that doesn't seem to clear things up, you may have to peek into that carb, but let's cross that bridge IF we need too. BB

Doc and I are using the same set up , the BAK , which apparently you are too. Great set up, when the jetting is done right. Take a look at Doc's profile , as his is a 1600, and when you get in the carb, the jetting should be similar. When you pull the carb down, post what you find in there so you/we have a starting point. You Can do it, and it is satisfying to get it right yourself. BB

Just a thought- slow down and go back to the last time that it ran good. Now make a list of the changes since that point. Check these first-sometimes we looks for big problems first and create more than we fix. I would relook at all the opil related issues first levels then plugs. dearman

I changed the oil to royal purple 10-40 and I used to put 93 octane but went down to 87. I ran seafoam through the tank a couple of times and I changed the spark plugs. I think they are autolite from Autozone. Ever since I did all of this I feel as if the bike has lost power and the exhaust tone is sounding real flattered instead of a stiff hard tone like it used to.

Before ... ran good
After.... ran bad

First thing is to suspect you did something wrong when you serviced it. Don't go looking in other areas before eliminating the most recent changes you made.

Oil .... I don't think so
Gas change ... possible
Spark plug .... possible

Soundslike a major case of blow by to me.

Can be a bloched crack case breather or way to much oil in the carter.

The first thing I thought of when I read this post is the spark plugs. I've seen this happen before in 4-wheelers and in cars and trucks. Check the spark plug gap. Sometimes parts stores will tell you that their plugs dont have to be gapped or that they are preset from the factory. This is a common misconception. ALL PLUGS have to be gapped. Even if(big if) they do pregap them, in shipping they can be bent in from being banged around. This may not be the case and you may have already done this, but its the first thing that came to mind when I read your post. I took this from the service manual for the roadstar(that I got by reading the posts here, thanks guys). Hopefully it might help. Good luck, Nick
