High pitched whine coming from gas tank area 6 Years ago
|
|
There is a very loud high pitched whine that seems to be coming from my gas tank area (I didnt' chase it around too much, so I'm not positive the source) that increases with revs. It sounds electrical, but it "almost" sounds like there's some straight cut gears rotating somewhere possibly
Is this noise normal? Bike performs fine nothing funky going on, Once again new roadstar rider here so not sure all of the in's and outs

Hey Soma, Good Evening. Wow I thought I was the only one with this problem (which I guess really is not a problem) of the Jet Turbine/ Whistleing sound. I too have this sound in my new 06 Road*. When I blimp the throttle it is more pronounced and the faster I go the louder it gets. Is this the same as yours? The replies I received on my first post was that this is the air being sucked through the airbox and intake but it almost sounds like its near the front cylinder and gas tank area like you noted . Gues we should just look at as we have a fast rocket ship between our legs. After all we are straddleing a 102 Cubic Inches of motor. Take Care and God Bless. Mike

Different sounds
When you hit the throttle, the engine requires a massive amount of air. The sound of the air rushing into the engine can be heard as a 'whoosing' sound. This sound is especially noticeable with the aftermarket airboxes.
The sewing machine whining sound is the gears. The whine increases with age, whoops, with speed.

I have recently bought an 02 midnight. I believe I have the same sound and also not too sure what it is. It seems to be at the same RPM in every gear, as well as neutral. In 5th gear, the sound begins at 120 km/hour (75 mph) and continues as it goes up in RPM's. It really quite irritating, and fairly loud. I cant decide whether it is an air sound (I thought it might be related to AIS system) or from the cylinder itself. Definately directly tied to engine speed and not road speed, so I figure it must not be belt related. Seems to be a common enough thing based on this forum. I just cant believe that it would be normal. I'll have to get loud pipes to fix it

Post edited by: Homer Simpson, at: 2006/05/29 17:05

Were in the hell are you doing 120+ 401?
Yours is something different as it occurs in neutral. I went out and started mine. The only thing I heard is the pipes and air cleaner.
Might be a good idea to get a scope and see if you can isolate approximately where the sound originates. The tank has a way of magnifying noises.

Thanks DocShadow,
It is indeed the 401 that is a good spot to let the throttle roll a bit. At 120 kph these days on the 401 transport trucks and old blind ladies are flying by me still!!
I will do some investigating into the sound. I am guessing that it is not a 'damage causing' sound (like cylinder metal scraping) At least I hope not. I had heard of someones Roadstar's oil pump being discovered broken. I was thinking that at high revs perhaps to oil supply to the cylinders would be starved and cause a sound? Could someone discredit this??
If I find out more I will post.
Thanks a lot,

Post edited by: Homer Simpson, at: 2006/06/01 11:13

I just installed lights and windshield on my 06. Now I'm hearing the whinning sound. Can't decide if its air whistling through the equipment I've installed or if the sound was there all the time, and now sitting behind the windshield it is enabling me to hear it. Mine seems to happen between 15 and 35 miles an hour. No relationship to RPM I am running. Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Once you put a windshield on you hear all kinds of noises. It' hard to advise if it's 'normal' or a 'problem'.
Try and isolate where it coming from (kinda hard to do while moving). Also recognize that sounds sometimes don't originate where you hear them.

Depending upon the sound, I've heard people complain of wind whistling through a tiny crack under their handlebar clamp. Seems more pronounced with a windshield. The cure is a thin bead of silicone. Haven't had the problem myself.
