Anybody remember..... 4 Years, 4 Months ago
|
|
Just doin' some thinking, I started driving in 76'. I used to fill my 454 Chevelle for 12 dollars (gas was .59 a gallon here)...from dang near empty! Which was most of the time. When I started ridin' bikes in the late 70's...and gas took a ridiculous hike up to .85 a gallon, it cost me 4 dollars to fill up! What a ripoff! LOL For all you old farts, remember when everybody said that when gas hit a buck a gallon, they were gonna start ridin' horses again?? Ahhh, for the good ole' days.

I think gas was 37 or 38 cents/ gallon in 70 when I started driving. And someone filled the tank for you, checked your oil and cleaned your windshield.

I worked at a gas station when I was in high school.....$5 for 8.8 gallons of gas still sticks in my mind. About 56 cents a gallon. Anyone recall the gas wars in the late 1960's? I remember my parents getting gas for 19 cents a gallon which included an oil check and a clean windshield. At those rates, we could fill up our R* for under a buck!

I can remember "gas wars" when stations with in view of each other would cut prices to .17 or lower a gal. They would give away dishes, glasses and "green Stamps" if you filled up. A couple of bucks, or so, filled her up. I used to think .50 cents was out of this world. Then anything over a buck. Then $2. Now $3. $2.98 is what it is around here now.

I'm a youngster , but can remember just 15 years ago (round the time I got married) gas was .89 cents a gallon. Was broke then , so all I could put in my car was 5 bucks. That was roughly 5 1/2 gallons of gas though, so you could go somewhere. Now you put in 5 bucks, you get a gallon and a half, and you don't go far . BB

I remember buying it at .39 when I mowed yards as a kid. It was in .80 - .90 range when I started driving. I could sneak a pack of cigs out of the vending machine at the laundry mat for .40 at that time also. Maybe the price of gas can be directly related to Tobacco?

My wifes mom used to collect S&H greenstamps up north. Not sure it was a southern thing though, as I can't recall them. BB
