Came across this topic and couldn't resist...

At the risk of (carbon) dating my self... It was the summer of '66, I was 15 and my dad bought me a Honda "fifty" to get back and forth to work with... (He was tired of spending extra for his gas to get me there...)

As soon as I got that "scooter", I quit my bus-boy job and went to work at the "Sinclair" gas station in town... After all, who could afford to keep throwing a gallon and a half of gas into that thing, every other day... and at 19 cents per!?! Heck, I needed 20 cents for a pack of smokes!

Minimum wage was 32 cents an hour and I got a nickle for every quart of oil I could sell... Half a quart low... "Uh, sir... You need a quart!" (Oh and because I was the "Night shift" guy... I had to clean and refill the oil jars.)

But, at the end of the day... that .009 cents per gallon? I've got gas for the ride home tonight!!!

I can remember "gas wars" when stations with in view of each other would cut prices to .17 or lower a gal. They would give away dishes, glasses and "green Stamps" if you filled up. A couple of bucks, or so, filled her up. I used to think .50 cents was out of this world. Then anything over a buck. Then $2. Now $3. $2.98 is what it is around here now.

Yep the good old Gas Wars...I remember 19.9¢ the summer of 1972

Started in my first gas station at 17 in St. Louis. The challenge was to manage to fit $2.00 worth of gas in those damn new VW's...those things will never last is a quote I still remember from the station owner. We also gave out:

I remember way back when it was only $2.50 a gallon for gas......those were the good days only $42 to fill the tank......Yesterday it's $3.19 and $63 to fill er up. I was going to buy a horse when it got over $3 a gallon Thing is hay, water and the place to keep the horse and the upkeep unfortunately it's cheaper to drive my truck!!

I remember working at the gas station in my area in 1972 gas was 35 cents a gallon. Check out these stat's http://www.energy.ca.gov/gasoline/statistics/gasoline_cpi_adjusted.html
If any of you are old enough to remember Ronald Reagan was the cause of gas prices climbing. He was the person who de-regulated gas! Before that time gas was like any other utility such as Elect., natural gas, phone etc. The oil companies had to prove to the government why they needed to raise their price and then they were only allowed to raise a small percentage. Once de-regulated they can do what they want. That is why EXXON reported 350 billion 100 million dollar profits earnings last year!!
Write to your congress person demanding that gas be regulated again. We can not live without gas as we have been made dependent upon it. So the government needs to regulate it. But unles people complain to the representives nothing will get done. We will all just sit around talking about how it used to be!!!!

In 1971 I worked at a worldfFamous chopper shop (AEE Choppers) but like most of the employees I rode a Honda. I remember putting 10 cents worth of gas in to get me to work one pay day! That worked out to about a 1/3 of a gallon and that would get me there to sell parts for Harleys that took a 1/3 of a gallon of oil a day!

Born in '72 . I do remember .89 a gallon though , when I first got married. Could only afford 5 bucks at a time (good for 5 1/2 gallons of gas), now it's 12 to fill the Roadie , and my truck laughs if I don't put at least 20 in it. Oh the good old days. BB
