2002 Road Star electrical upgrade for accessories 8 Months, 4 Weeks ago
My bike is basically stock except pipes and driving lights. If I were to want additional accessories such as GPS, lighting and perhaps heated gloves/vest etc. would I need to upgrade the electrical? One person suggested that when my battery needs replacement, upgrade from the current 18 amp to a 20 amp.(not that this would address the heating issue) I am going to put in a Power outlet for my GPS but got to thinking about future needs that may be more demanding on the electrical supply.
Thanks for your help on this.

I would say you could handle the gps, but adding a vest and gloves will require a beefed up system..I would guess all things combined you would be pulling an additional 10 amps or so..the older roadies don't have much extra...

I have an 03 R* and there isn't much excess power available from the stock alternator. One thing you can do to reduce the load is to replace the all of the turn signal and the tail/stop light bulbs with LED types.

You should probably look for a stator and a reg / rec off of an 05 or newer Roadie if you want to increase the load that much.

Will the stock 2005 charging system handle accessories like bike lights, driving lights and heated vest, gloves and GPS all at the same time?
I understood that the stock 2005-newer charging stators were about the best you could get for power, even better than the "aftermarket upgrades" for the 1999-2004 Roadies.?

Thanks for some great info. I searched around yesterday and found an article on this site that told me how to change it out and what items are needed. It seems a little too complicated for me to attempt. I think the parts will be $300+ and then I'll need to find someone to do it. I'm headed out to the Bamabike fest in two weeks and will at least have my GPS running. After that I'll do the upgrade. Thanks to all for the quick response.

Yes it will..... My son has a `05 Midnight Star and he has the driving lights, heated gloves, heated overpants and the heated gloves all going at the same time. The bike never gives him any trouble.....

I also have heated gear for my wife and I. We have a `06 Roadie Silverado. Never misses a beat....

ok, on this line of thinking, can the 2005 that already has the passing lamps and a radio handle the additional load of running and brake lights on a trunk?
