4 way flashers for your Road Star 2 Years, 5 Months ago

This thread discusses the Content article: 4 way flashers for your Road Star
I decided to build 4way flashers for my Roadie.
I found the plans on this site says I need a double pole single throw toggle switch. I went all over auto stores electrical supply houses nobody carries it. I did find one hardware store but the toggle was huge.
Can I use a regular on off toggle and put the can wire to the one post and the two signal wires to the other post, rather then one can wire to two post and the signals have their own seperate posts?
I spent two hours driving around can't find the one that is called for
Thanks
Ron

Hi Ron,
Did you check with any of the big box home improvement stores? I think that I picked up my DPST toggle switch at Home Depot, but it's been several years ago.

Cruiser,
I'm pretty sure you can find a DPST switch at Radio Shack. I haven't bought any there in a while but they used to have a lot of different sizes, etc.

Ron,
I just looked at the diagram in your original post. I think if you hooked the two signal wires to the same post on a SPST switch you'd lose your turn signals. I think the whole reason for the two poles is to keep the right and left sides separate. Again, I'm pretty sure you could find that switch at a Radio Shack.

Cruiser
Did you try a google search to see if you can find someplace that has them?. Hobby shops? Boat dealers?

Your so right I tried a different switch and lost my turn signals.
I will try Home Depot in the morning.
When I cut the wires to splice in the switch wires the crimp connectors I was using color red would not grab. I wound up twistin wires together and using shrink rap. The rap seems as if it would hold the wires together I hope. I could not solder because I have a parking spot and no outlets where I park the bike.
They don't give you much slack in the wires I had to add an extra small wire to give me enough slack to twist wires together then heat shrink them.
I am truly not handy but I try, and I thank everyone for all the help it is deeply appreciated.

I found that if you cannot find a double pole single throw switch
You can use a double pole double throw switch.
In a single pole you bridge the common posts in the middle
For a dpdt switch you do not bridge the common in the middle you bridge the top or bottom poles and what would be the commons in the middle you hook you signals to them instead of bridging this way the unused poles are not hot.
A dpdt works fine.
Thanks for everyones help

Ron,
I would recommend that you either solder the joint or use connectors. Your current setup is not robust enough and invites problems down the road. Shrink wrap is only good for covering wires, not for providing a good joint. Although I've never tried to somke one
If you don't have access to electricity then try a butane-powered solder iron or a cold-heat iron. Good investment for future bike mods.

I just did the 4-way flashers on my 05 Road Star. I got the spdt switch at Home Depot. It works great the way the instructions had it wired and where the switch is.

Did you put a water proof cap over the switch? When I did this I found it would not hold the switch tight that the switch below in the side cover could rotate from vibration. I put a nut on the switch and then the water proof cap on. The cap would not go over the nut so I used some silicone to make sure no water gets in.
