how much oil in a 1600? 4 Years, 2 Months ago
Now that the season is opening, I'm going to give my bike a good check-up.
According to my maintenance manual, I should put 4.2 litres (4.44 quarts, I think) in my R*.
I have read here that on 1700 the right oil amount is slightly less than 4.2 lt. Is it the same on the 1600?

I've always put in 4 L which is 4.2 qt.

Our oil used to come in 4 L jugs but for some mysterious reason it now comes in 4.4 L (4.2 qt) jugs. so I usually guess on how much I now put in.

Use either 4 quarts or 4 liters. Replace the filter, drain the crankcase, and drain the oil tank. Put 2 quarts/liters in the oil tank, run engine for 15 seconds, and then add 2 quarts/liters to oil tank - done.

The R* is not picky wrt precision of oil fill. Overfilling is more of a concern than under filling. I put in 4 quarts and declare victory.

Just did my first oil change after the tranny recall work. The guide in the Tech Tips was RIGHT ON! Simple and Easy. 4 qts and she's purrin like a lion (so my neighbor says) . Thanks again to all of you contributors out there who have made owning and maintaining my R* an enjoyable experience. I have a Harley friend who has been lookin for a site like this one.....still lookin. Told him to just sell the sportster and get a reliable R*.....he'll have all the guidance he needs right here to maintain it!.
