Call me a dummy, but I have not figured out how to post a question...
What could I be doing wrong?.

Start by making sure you are in the forum category you want to create a new post/thread in.

1) You can go to the main forum page (click "Forum" tab at top of the page) and then pick the forum you want to post in.

-OR-

2) At the bottom of every forum page there is a "Board Categories" field in the bottom blue bar just above the "Powered by FireBoard" credit that you can use to select a category you want to "jump" directly to.

-THEN-

In all forum category lists, above the category header, there is a "NEW THREAD" button you can use to create a new thread in that category.

If you are already in the category you want to create a new thread in, perhaps reading another thread in that category, at the top right there is a "Forum Tools" link in the category header. If you click on that, one of the options is to "Post New Topic". It will let you start a new thread in that same category without having to go out of that thread first.
