Starter switch does nothing!!! 7 Years, 7 Months ago
took out my MM 2000 custom sat.Went in had a buger came out got on the bike hit the starter switch and nothing.
My battery is new So I know its not the problem.
Have had no problems up to this point with anything.
Got the bike home checked the starter switch and the kill switch and both seemed ok.
Also tried the starter direct and it works.
Not sure what else to check.there is some sort of a selonoid on the right side panel by the blinker switch but im not sure what it is.
Can someone please advise me on this starter switch problem?
Im stumped.

If the starter works direct, then sounds like a switch/signal problem.

Did you check the switches eletrically, or did you just check the mechanical function?

The one most folks have problems with (if at all) is the kickstand switch. You might need to find an ohm meter and see if it is opening and closing properly.

I checked the starter and the kill switch with a test light by puting the test light on the dead post and pushing the switch.the power either came on or went off witch indicates that it is working.did not know how to check the kick stand switch.is there a way to bypass it?

I just looked at mine, and the wires are hard wired in. This will not make it easy.

You are going to need to trace those wires to some point of plug in, then use that point. If they go all the way into the ignition module plugs, you may need to unhook the plug to test. Alternatively, you could cut into the wires test, then splice back together. Considering the amount of slack in that wire (none) this will mean putting some shunts in to get it wired back together.

This is just thinking out loud, maybe someone will chime in with a better idea.

Well I tried to check out the brake switch but to be honest i not sure how.with the test like there was no power going to it on either side.im no electrician for sure.
Also tried to check the kick stand switch.did find where it plugged in and like the brake switch showed no power on either wire.Do I use an ohm meter or what?
Also I cant get my seat to release at all.not sure if that problem can be tied into the starter problem.since it is released by the ignition key.
Im out of ideas.
Thanks doc for advice.
your bike is cool doc!!!!

I'm not talking about the "brake switch".

On the left hand side of the handlebars, to the left of the clutch and underneath the handlebars, there is a small switch which works together with the kickstand switch to disble your bike. Somethimes the switch 'sticks'.

A good way to by-pass the switch is cut a short piece of wiring, remove the two wires that go into the switch and short these wires out with the short piece of wire. By shorting it out you 'remove' it from the circuit and can then see if it's the clutch switch or another switch.

I believe you can also short out the kickstand switch but haven't done it and don't have the wiring diagram at work to check.

The seat and starter are not related. If your seat is difficult to get off, try pressing down on the front of the seat when turning the key. They sometimes stick.

Re:Starter switch does nothing!!! 7 Years, 7 Months ago
thanks for the advice.
Have checked about everything but under the tank.
I cant get the seat off!!
Have tried everything.
There has to be some sort of alternate way of getting this latch to release.
What if the cable breaks or something?
Anyone know if there is another way to get it to realease??
I have to get this seat off to get the tank off.The seat covers the tank end.
Thanks.

With your fist, pound the seat while turning the key.

Check your fuses.
Check your starter relay.

MM,

Once you get the seat off, may want to take off the positive and negative cables and clean them. Also, may want to check the negative cable, 'where' it attaches to the top of the oil tank, (and clean). R*'y's are notorius for 'that' grounding cable coming loose.

Just my $.02 worth,

Odo
