Rough Idle 4 Years, 2 Months ago
I just bought a 2004 Roadie 1700 It has Sampson Warloards on it It also has K&N air filter It also came from California. I runs great execpt when it is Idling
I Idles very rough Sort of a Loping like it has a large cam although I know that's not the case. Could It be a Jetting problem or Just an adjustment?
What size of jet would all of you use. I live in Salt Lake City at about 4700 Feet above sea leavel. Any Help would be most appreciated. I am also in process of removing the AIS system

The PO might just have turned the idle down. Try turning it up and see how it goes.

The Roadies don't have a smooth flat idle. They all seen to kinda miss a beat. Hard to tell if that's what your taliking about without hearing it.

Welcome to the clinic, you will learn allot here.

The road* takes some time to warm up - they all do. In the summer at 90* it will take several minutes before you should take off. When it's hot the motor is not smooth........just becuase you have a twin with BIG sucker pistons. It can also be noisey on the top end.

Bottm line is that it will never sound like a water cooled bike(quiet) when idling.

If you're able to get info from the PO , they might know what pilot jet is in it. It could be too rich on the idle circuit. If you end up inside the carb , have a 35 pilot jet ready to go in. That's a good starting point. Before that , Where is your PMS set? If it's set too many turns out , it could be causing a rough idle. PMS screw is on the bottom of the carb , very close to where the carb meets up with the intake manifold. It will require a small flathead to turn it. It would not hurt to turn it in till it LIGHTLY bottoms , all the while counting how many full turns it took to turn it in (clockwise). Put a small mark on your screwdriver handle to count full turns. Back it out 3 full turns for a starting point. Hopefully these with the others suggestions get you where you want to be. BB

Re:Rough Idle 4 Years, 2 Months ago
My '05 M* also has an idle problem that nobody can seem to figure out. It run and idles best after 5 miles of riding but idle gets progessively worse the hotter the motor get...to the point that it fires only on the front cylinder at idle. I've tried MM into the carb, changed the plugs, run only 87 octane fuel, regular oil changes at 4k with Amsoil 20w50. I'm suspecting that the hydralic lifters are "out of range" when the motor is hot but my mechanic argues with me that such a problem can exist. I currently have 16k on the motor. Not sure what more to do. What do you'all think???
