When I bought my bike used it was difficult to release the seat too. You'll be amazed at what a tiny squirt of WD40 on the latch will do. Now its smooooooth. (I know a lot of people don't like WD40 though for one reason or another. Not advocating lubing the whole bike with it but it is good for minor things.)

It seems that everyone has their own way of dealing with the seat issue. You have to find a system that works for you and that'll be your right way to do it. I'm with Doc on this one I have to jump on my seat a little to loosen it up. Got it down to a science now but the early days were maddening.
