Brand new to forum, NEED HELP! 4 Years, 2 Months ago
Iam wanting a Road Star Silverado, I found an 2001 that appears to be in good shape, rode nice, shifted well etc. The only thing that worries me is it has 68000 miles on it. He wants $4000 for it, do you think this is worth the money? Is there anything i should worry about, or make sure i check out before i buy it? Any kind of info would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

ohmatman, That's not a bad price, mileage is a little high, but if it was taken care of, it should still be good..
All the 1600's had a tranny recall, you might check that out by calling yamaha and giving them the vin #..If it hasn't been done, then the upside is when they do it they would put new rings in at the same time..

NADA puts the low value around $5,000 but doesn't consider the miles. Not sure what the Kelly Blue book would be. You can look that up and compare. www.kbb.com

I've only got around 8,800 miles on mine so I'll let someone else chime in on the milage idea being OK.

Here's couple of things to watch out for .... Failed Parts

Other than that ... if it's already gone 68 k and runs solid then it's good for another 68 k.

Hopefully, if it was taken care of with the maint. done at the right intravals.
With that milage try to find out the PO's driving habbits...
Also, consider what you'll do with the bike...
For instance if the PO was a marathon rider and only traveled on thousand mile runs, you might not get much more use out of it by only using the bike to "get around town".

It's been my experiance that "long haul use" machinery usually holds up well with continued "long haul use", but once it get's put into "semi-retiremnt" things start breaking down quickly...

...that reminds me I have a doctors appointment this afternnon...

Ask yourself what do you want and expect out of the bike, if your want something for long touring and reliable, maybe finding something with lower miles could be a good thing. It is possible that this one will run headache free for another 68K, but it is also possible that you will need to start fixing something after your first trip. You should look at is as risk vs. reward and see which way the scale will tip.

Whatever you choose, you will love the R* .

I would look around some more first, do not jump on the first thing you see, there are good deals out there on bikes with a lot less mileage, I would be skeptical of that one. Be Careful and Good Luck with your Choice. Check out Ebay and Cycle Trader.

Sold my last GL1000 Goldwing with nearly 130,000 miles on her , would not hesitate it ride it Anywhere. If it has had its recall done, great. No headache for you to worry with , and a fresh set of rings to boot. If it hasn't , you can have the oil pump gear upgraded and you still get a fresh set of rings. Win/win. I don't sweat mileage much if I can "eyeball" a bike and tell it's been taken care of. 68,000 miles is average for a 7 year old car , nobody sweats that , bikes aren't that different mechanically speaking. My opinion anyway. BB
