Re:synthetic oil 8 Months ago
This is off the Amsoil website:

APPLICATIONS
AMSOIL Synthetic 10W-40 Motorcycle Oil is recommended for liquid or air-cooled 4-stroke engines. It meets SAE 80W/90, API GL-1 gear oil requirements and is recommended for transmissions on both 4- and 2-stroke motorcycles. AMSOIL MCF is recommended for Honda®, Kawasaki®, Yamaha®, Suzuki®, BMW®, Husqvarna®, Victory® and other motorcycles where 10W-40 or 20W-40 engine oils or SAE 80W/90, GL-1 gear oils are used. Not recommended where an API GL-4 or GL-5 gear oil is required.

Re:synthetic oil 8 Months ago
You are most correct Musky and we already knew that...

But can you please explain... the one oil for all... by syn 3

engine.. tranny... and transfer case...that is the question here...

when the primary transfer case

is exactly the same in a HD as in a Yamaha ...

and dont tell me they are using GL-1 or GL-4 in their engines...

and the differnce between GL-1 and Gl-4 is only compatability with brass??

Re:synthetic oil 8 Months ago
The original question was about Amsoil 10/40 in the transfer case. There still seemed to be questions about it so I went to the Amsoil site to copy what they say word for word. I'm not trying to tell you anything. I don't know anything about Syn3 or why Harley uses it. If you feel comfortable using it then by all means buy some.

Re:synthetic oil 8 Months ago
I use the amsoil 10w40 in the engine and the amsoil 80w90 gear lube
in the transfer case. Both have worked fine. Yamaha now has put out different oil blends and full syn. for different apps.
I wouldn't use 10w40 oil in the transfer case.

Re:synthetic oil 8 Months ago
From >>> http://www.upmpg.com/drivetrains.htm

API service classifications range from GL-1 through GL-5, with the number indicating level of service severity. GL-1 is the least severe, and its requirements are normally satisfied with motor oil. GL-2 requirements are met with rust and oxidation inhibited oils. GL-3 through GL-5 require the addition of extreme pressure (EP) additives, with higher GL numbers indicating a higher level of EP additive.

GL-1 is used for gears operating under light conditions vs GL-4 which is intended for gears under extreme pressure.

It possible that the R* transfer gear case only needs GL-1. Why Yamaha recommends GL-4 .... ... over engineering? :

Re:synthetic oil 8 Months ago
DOC

That explains a lot
Although the grade numbers are larger than those associated with motor oils, gear lubricants are not necessarily heavier. The two separate grading systems are used to minimize confusion between motor oil and gear lubes.

and here I always thought the higher numbers meant a heavier oil

So the new synthetics like I said can handle the demands of the transmission gears ...the road star transmission sharing the same oil as the engine so that should also be good enough for the transfer case...

A very informative article....

Re:synthetic oil 8 Months ago
Ya ... if you 'feel' a 30W lawnmower oil and a 90W gear oil, the textural differences are not that apparent as you would think they would be.

There's no hypoid gears and the transfer case is not an 'extreme pressure' area so theoretically regular heavy oil should do the trick. Still a mystery why Yama recommends GL-4.

Re:synthetic oil 8 Months ago
yep.. just a short chain running through a bath of oil and two sprockets

I would say the transmission gears are under a lot of wear and tear...

Gl-1 and amsoil syn 10w-40 should be fine...in the transfer case... and maybe the Amsoil rep has something to tell Yamaha..
