This thread is discussing the need for a gl-4 gear oil in the transfer case when possibly a gl-1 or amsoil 10w40 synthetic would do as told by a amsoil rep...

we are concerned about wear characteristics ...
not noise

You would not think a chain and sprockets would be "EP" GL requirement.
I do know that GMC, FMC & Dodge use Transfercases in their 4x4's and these transfer cases generally use a DEXRON Automatic Transmission Fluid in them. These transfer cases have a large chain and sprockets, and they also have lots of gears. You cannot use heavy gear oil in the chain drive tranfer cases or it will stretch then chain in colder weather and ruin the tranfer case altogether.
You would think it better to use gear oil in the transfer case because of the gears, but if you think about it, Automatic Transmissions have a ton of wet clutches, gears and planetary gears (FWD's have a hypoid differential gear set in the tranmission as well) and most of 'em use plain old DEXRON ATF, not GL gear oil. Gear oil is not a hydraulic oil that is wet clutch compatible.
ATF seems to do a good job of protecting the planetary gears and hypoid gears in automatic trannies and transfer cases, ....so ATF must be pretty good oil.
I'm not saying that I would use DEXRON ATF in my Roadie's tranfer case, but if you think of the punishment a 4x4's automatic transmission and tranfer case go through using only ATF, I would think that ATF would work in the Roadie's tranfer case, if you had nothing else to put in it.
Chrysler even uses ATF in some of their manual gearboxes in the Dakotas and Half-Ton models, because it offers easier shifting, especially in colder weather.

Now I really opened another can-of-worms!

You probably could but we just want to know about using the 10w40 syn in the transfer case...

I guess Mobil 1 and Jay Leno are endorsing the use of mobil I v-twin because of its shear stability in all three areas...motor tranny and primary...

Well Pop, I think that 10w40 Synthetic would work just fine in the Roadie transfer case since it only has a chain and two sprockets in there.
....Most V-8 auotmobile engines have a chain and two sprockets to drive the camshaft off the crankshaft, and the Overhead-Cam engines all have sprockets and long chains to drive their camshafts off the crankshafts. Valve trains put a lot of stress on their timing chains and sprockets, at several thousand RPM's and high temperatures.
If you keep your oil and filter changed, some "pushrod-valve-actuated" automotive engines will go over 500,000 Km's without any timing chain or sprocket trouble, using good old 5w30 dino oil.
I don''t see any reason a good synthetic 10w40 or 20w50 motor oil would not work in the Roadie or HD transfercases, and protect them just as well.
If there is no gears in the tranfercase, then I cannot see why there would need to be a "GL"-rated gear oil used in there. There is no "shear" with a roller-chain and sprocket setup, as the rollerchain actually has "bearings" built into it's design using the "rollers".
The Yamaha 250's use an exposed chain and sprocket drive that only reqiuires chain-lube,
not GL-rated gear oil. And those 250 chains run in a lot of dirt, dust, and road spray -Not in a nice cozy case with a clean oil-bath.
.....Some more thoughts to think about......
