What's the best headlight??? 4 Years, 1 Month ago
Hey guys
I'm sure there have been lots of other discussions about what's the best headlight to use, so I'm apologizing in advance.

It just seems that the lights on my 01 RS are quite dim compared to other guys I've ridden with. What's in my bike currently is a Philips H4 60/55W. Can I run a higher wattage bulb, or are there brighter bulbs of the same wattage available? I'm also running passing lamps and they're H3's that are 35 watts. Thanks, Mark

This may help. Check out Cruiserbob's post on the topic. I've switched out my headlight bulb, but I haven't done my passing lamps yet. My headlight's certainly is whiter if not brighter:

Got the H4 & H3 Silverstars, and installed them. My passing lights were 35 watts, and the new ones are 55. I absolutely can't believe how awesome they are!

I've been riding all this time and missing out on how bright my lights could've been! What a HUGE difference they make!

I have bulbs made by PIAA that are 60/55 watts for the H4 but put out light equal to 135/125 watts. The H3's are 35 watt with 70 watt light output. They light up the world!

Unless you have a high output stator you need to be careful not to overpower the alternator.

I AGREE you want 35 watts in the passing lamps especially if you add extra lighting or the RTB controller

and especially for the 1600

the PIAA bulb is expensive...but a whiter brighter light without the extra wattage
the "extreme white" series
The H4 60/55= 110/100w apparently... has a stronger filiament design for vibration...
the H3 35watt=70watt
(wouldnt the H4 vibration be a better match for the H3 35 watt)
do you have any figures on life expectancy and lumens or candle power???

I am in the auto parts business here in Canada so I am going to
order the PIAA bulbs for myself and try them in my adzure headlamps...

I will report later however from what I have studied the PIAA extreme white bulbs look like the best and worth the extra bucks....

I love the PIAA bulbs I have had them on the bike for a year and a half and 28,000 miles. I was run off the road a couple of months ago by an idiot and laid it down in dirt which broke the bolt holding th passing and running/signal lights together. THe bulbs still work. I also have Harley fog lights on the engine guard they also have PIAA 35 watt H3. the engine guard was destroyed but the bulbs still work! I have the passing lamps tied into the high beam and run on high beam all the time during daylight, the fog lamps are tied into the low beam; so anyone coming toward me is going to see three lights.

I went with the Piaa 35w60 bulbs for the passing lamps. They are $35.00 shipped compared to the 35w70 which were around $60.00 shipped. The 35w60 seemed close to the same light as the silverstar headlight bulb.

P.S. This is for a pair.

Along these lines.....I'd like to run around 5-6 pairs of 'bullit lights' and they will likely be of the LED type. What kind of reliability might I expect from the charging system...? Mind you I will be installing a grade 'A' new battery, a Yuasa out'a the P&J catalogue. You'v all seen these 'well lit' bike dressers with a couple lights up front, then 6-8 rear facing on the fender/ hardbags and Trim rail. I'm not going to go nuts here, just about 4 on the front and 4-6 mabe 8 on the rear. Will the alternator pull these..? What about incidesant bulbs..? What total of watts or amps should be within the window of safe draw on the system..?

Sorry to say it but I come from the school where, 'Electricity is invisable and will kill you'

Don't assume it's a dim light/bulb causing your lack of lighting power. My 01 headlight does not stay in alignment so the headlight drops down low and seems dim. I have to realign the light often. I'm not sure if it's only my bike or if this is an issue with older RS's. Once you make sure your headlight is properly aligned then start replacing bulbs.
