My previous bike was also a 750 Virago (1996), and I have been a Yamaha rider since 1976, so I know you may be feeling a little out-of-sorts on this big old bear. Different kind of bike, different kind of riding. But I gotta tell ya, at this age and weight, and not really caring about speed, I love this bike!

Be patient. Getting through the quirks and finding and eliminiating the odd noise here and there is well worth it, or at least it is for me.

THanks for the link to the picture of the rear! I read most of that thread and it was a big help.

Yep at this age and weight...... LOL This is the bike for me.

It was a big comfort to learn the leaking coils were pre 05, Ok on the rev Limiter, yea thats what it is I bet.

I just drove it home at midnight, 50 miles and it ran a lot better than it has in colder weather.

Exhaust Mod in Am. Janets Bike has V&H exhaust and hers sounds way better than mine, time to let some beast out!

Thanks all for reply and good info.

Welcome MS1700! You're right about being in the right place. I have a stock 04 Roadie and staged the exhaust yesterday. I went ahead to stage 3 and it sounds great. Best of luck!

MS1700..welcome to the clinic!

I went stage 2 on my exhaust last weekend, and although I was pleased with the results, it only lasted me 1 week. I installed a set ok HK K2's today! SOOOOOOO much better then drilling the stock pipes. In my opinion, the stock pipes are fugly, bulky and do not do justice to looks or sound.

Re:Newbie Update 4 Years, 1 Month ago
Talk about being in right place, If you look at my intro I was kinda unsatisfied with my new purchase, It was slow and my GF's 750 could whip me. Plus I had driveability issues, (Pop on takeoff through Carb.) Well I did the Stage one Exhaust Mod Sat and boy did I like that! But still Pop through Carb and stall and jump and not want to start when warm. Well Today Yamaha Dealer took a listen and with more open exhaust easily determine something wrong right away he said may be a intake leak and 2 hours later he called and said Head is cracked! So, I was right! I do have a DOG! (1000 miles) BUT they are going to make it right, fly the parts in and I'll have a 1700! Whoooooooo! I can't wait! Problem is, it's like sunny and 70 here 1st time this year and I am W/O a bike.

But thanks for all the help! Surffing here I have a list of MODS to do and I really think the Stage One Exhaust made it easier to find the problem as it had been to dealer once for same problem and just got a re-jet. (I ride in any temp they set it for colder weather) I think the dealers should do the Stage One as Dealer prep!

Whoooo! GF took the back seat on mine and she has long llegs so I will swap the Rear Floorboards out next.

Cracked head?!? How weird...! Whoda thunk!
Sorry about your bikeless great weather...
When you do get it back and are able to ride, you could try what I do when I take mine out...
(I'm down in Folrida and it's pretty warm all the time, but I still need to let my Star warm up...)
So... I pull the choke, twist the throttle once and hit the starter... (Fires right up!) After about 20 seconds... I push the choke in one detent stop... (you can feel it click and hear the difference in the air flow...) Then, just before I lift the kickstand, I push the choke in all the way, (fully open...) and pull it out two detent stops and start my ride (I'll push it all the way in after about a mile or so...)
I have to include here that I live at the far end of a condo complex and have to nearly idle out over an eighth of a mile, so that's part of my warm-up period...
It has worked for me and has all but eliminated the carb popping. It has also reduced the warm-up time to less than a 1/2 mile when I do turn off the choke.
